Die In Typhoon
Lieut. Richard King Hargrave, U. S. Naval Reserve, is believed to have been a victim of
the capsizing and sinking of the U. S. S. Monaghan during a typhoon in the South Pacific
on Dec. 18, 1944. First reported as missing, later word received by his wife, Mrs.
Marybelle Westbay Hargrave, 862 Kinsey St., Valparaiso, from one of six survivors of the
sea disaster, indicated there could be no hope Lieut. Hargrave survived the disaster.
Besides the widow he leaves a daughter, Mary J., age 3, and his parents, Rev. and Mrs. W.
L. Hargrave, Oxford, Ind. He was a graduate of Valparaiso university and had been in the
naval service since February, 1943.
