8, 1946.

Present Air Medal Tues.
The first public presentation of an army or navy award to be made in Porter county will
take place Tuesday evening, Feb. 8, in Chesterton high school auditorium when an air medal
will be given to Mrs. H. F. Carlson for her son, 2nd Lieut. Howard F. Carlson, missing in
action in the South Pacific.
The Sixth Service Command, Area D, District No. 3, with headquarters in Michigan City,
will be in charge of the presentation. Capt. Temple R. Lovett, commander of the area, has
arranged a program which includes music by the Chesterton high school band, advancing of
the colors by Chesterton Post 170, American Legion; invocation by Rev. Walter Wilson;
introduction of the presenting officer, reading of the citation, presentation of the
medal, singing of the national anthem and returning of the colors and taps.
According to a letter received by Mrs. Carlson from Major General J. A. Ulio, Fort Hayes,
Columbus, O., the Air Medal decoration was awarded by President Roosevelt for meritorious
achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy.
The citation awarding Lt. Carlson the medal was made Sept. 15, 1943, by Lt. Gen. George C.
Kenney, commander of the 5th Air Force in the Pacific area.
Besides Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Carlson, parents of Lt. Carlson, it is expected two of his
sisters will be present for the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.
