JULIA CORNELSSEN MAACK
Julia Caroline Luise Cornelssen was the last child born to Carl and Augusta Dorschlag
Cornelssen. She was born on 25-May-1870 in Bulow, Germany and was baptized in the
Lutheran Church in Rehna, Germany on 17-June-1870. Her Godparents were Julius Barnin,
Luise Cornelssen of Bulow (possibly her older sister), and Mrs. Caroline Molter of
Parber.
When Julia was fourteen, she came with her family to Ransom, Kansas where she lived until
the early 1900s. As her sisters married, she remained in the old stone house with her
parents and her older unmarried brothers Carl, Ernest, and Martin. In the 1895 Kansas
State Census, she is at the Cornelssen house and a hired hand named J.H. Maack is also
living there.
No marriage record exists in Ness or Trego Counties Kansas for them, but between 1895 and
1900, John H. Maack and Julia Cornelssen were married and lived in Franklin Township, just
north across the county line from the old Cornelssen place. Maack had purchased a farm
there in 1887 from Ernest Cornelssen, Julia's brother. Julia and John must have lived
at this place for a few years, then he bought 160 acres in Township 11 South Range 23 West
in Trego County just north of Wakeeney, where they moved to. They sold the land in 190XX
and bought another little place in Trego County.
On July 21, 1906, they had a son, mentioned in the Wakeeney paper, but the name was never
given. The newspaper stated "Mr. Maack is stepping higher than ever since he has an
heir".
In January, 1907, Mr. Maack went to Kansas City to conduct some business, and it is
thought at this time he may have been in contact with someone about some land in Arkansas.
J.H. Maack advertised a sale for his land and valuables in January 1907 for a sale on
February 13, 1907 on his home place. The week after his sale, the Wakeeney paper stated
the sale went good and was attended by several people, but also reported that Maack had
purchased a farm near the Hot Springs in Arkansas. Then, a couple of weeks later, Maack
advertised 20 tons of good alfalfa in stack that must be purchased by March 1st.
The March 9th edition of the Wakeeney newspaper discussed the Maacks going to the south
part of Trego County to visit her relatives and then taking the Missouri Pacific Railroad
at Ransom to their new home in Bryant, Arkansas. Maack had sold the 160 acres of land to
J.M. McStay for $5000. The farm Maack had purchased was 116 acres in Saline County just
outside of Bryant for $1600.
J H Maack (not sure if it is John H. or Julia H.) sent a postcard from Bryant, Arkansas in
October 1907, to Julia's brother Otto Cornelssen, still living near Ransom, Kansas
(see below). J.H. asks him for Julia's sister Emma's new address, as Emma and her
husband Will Talbert had just moved to Colorado Springs around this time.
Widower John H. Maack sold the land in Saline County on November 21, 1907, 1 1/2 months
after the postacrd was sent. Julia and John Maack are not located in the 1910 census for
Saline County. Family legend has it that Julia went back to Germany, but this has never
been verified. The only information found as yet for their young son is the newspaper
account announcing his birth. It is not yet known if he survived infancy.
