Harmon's obit, dated 18 Apr 1901: "Hiram Hardesty, an old settler of Union
tp., was found dead on a lounge at his home last evening about 6 o'clock. The
desceased about half an hour before had been to a neighbor's for a pail of
water for supper and afterwards laid down on the lounge until supper was
ready. When his wife went to call him she found him dead. He was about 65
years old and leaves besides his wife, 5 children. Coroner Carson drove out
this afternoon to hold the inquest. the funeral arrangements will be given
tomorrow."
Isabelle's obit: "Departed, this, the 2nd day of Feb. 1912, Isabelle
Hardesty, wife of Harmon Hardesty, of Porter Co., IN, aged 79 years. the
subject of this memoir was born in Carroll Co., OH, Aug the 2nd 1833. she
came with her mother, brothers and sisters to Porter Co., IN, in her early
childhood. She was married to Harmon Hardesty Sr., May 9, 1864 (1858). To
this union were born eight children, 6 sons and two daughters. Four sons,
Harmon, John, Schuyler and William Hardesty, and one daughter, Mrs. Chester
Guernsey, of Porter Co., IN, survive her. There are also 20 grandchildren and
2 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Milner and a sister, Rebecca Condon
of Belleville, KS, to mourn her lose. In the early autumn of the past year
Mrs Hardesty was stricken with that dread disease, asthma. The best medical
aid that could be procurred was employed, but the disease of long standing
baffled all their skill. Throught her long and severe suffering she never
murmured or complained. Thus she continued for several months, bearing with
great Christian fortitude the pain and anguish she was called to endure,
after expressing a great desire to depart and be with Christ, whose divine
presence adn grace had led and sustained her all through life's journey.
Gradually she departed."
Rebekah's obit, 3 May 1916, Republic Co. Democrat: "Rebecca J Milner was
born Mar 2, 1835 in Carroll Co., OH and died at the home of her daughter Mrs
C.E. Leedom, Sun, Apr 30, 1916, aged 81 yrs, 1 month and 28 days. She was
married to William Porter, Congdon in Porter Co, IN in 1858. 4 child-ren were
born to his union, James, Arabelle, Ella J and Eliza C, the later dying in
infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Congdon and children came to Republic Co., KS in Dec
1878 and Mr Congdon died the following year. The one daughter Arabelle
Congdon Harsh died in 1887 and the son James passed away in 1896.
Mrs. Congdon joined the Presbyterian church in this city 29 years ago. She
has made her home with her daughter and family for twenty-one years.
The funeral was held at the home of C.E. Leedom, conducted by Rev. D.H.M.
Boyle of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the Pleasant View
Cemetery, Tuesday at 1:30 o'clock."
