Miss Phebe Jones, of Michigan, and Miss Mattie Bradley visited our
school Monday afternoon.
VALPARAISO
The commissioners settled with the architect and contractors and had
them in full last Friday.
The case of State vs. Shine was taken out of the hands of the Mayor and
brought before the grand jury where he was indicted.
The hill at the Fort Wayne depot is being graded and will be a great
improvement to the entrance of that place.
M. ODonohue the contractor is back for a few days.
Mrs. F. P. Jones died a week ago last Tuesday from St. Pauls church.
She had been ailing a long time but will be much missed by her large
number of friends. She was of that disposition which made friends of all
who knew here.
Geo. Kruyer, formerly a resident of this city and a brother of Henry
Kruyer, was stabbed at Walnut, near Plymouth, Nov. 4th by a man named
Harrison. The brute was arrested and placed in Plymouth jail to await
the result of Kruyers injuries.
John Howard the baggage master on the accommodation is very sick. His
place is filled by Chas. Irving the brakeman on the train.
Last Saturday Lewis Ladear, a painter working for James OKeefe, while
working on a scaffold on M. S. Harrolds house fell and broke a rib.
The funeral of the murdered man was attended by the iron men and slaters
employed on the new church and occurred last Sunday.
Court Notes:
The case of James Miller et al. vs. J. Carver et al was dismissed.
In the suit of Jas. R. Vinnege vs. Josiah Hively et al. judgment on
default was taken for $413.10.
Edward K. Eastman vs. Wm. Brummitt was continued.
In the suit of Martha Hart et al. vs. L.N.A. & C. Ry Co., defendants
filed motion for new trial.
C. L. Tannehill filed his current report in the guardianship of Hubert
Dye and it was approved.
The trial of the Adolph Gustafson assignment was postponed until next
term of court, the contesting parties not being ready for trial.
In the case of King Dillingham vs. Silas C. Beam a chattel foreclosure
was taken for $92.40.
In C. M. Culbertson vs. Miriam W. Merrifield, et al. foreclosure was
taken for $832.80.
Catherine A. Welch et al. vs. Eugene I. Welch et al. is a case from
Laporte county, involving a stock of goods, which much of the time
yesterday and is on the docket for today.
George Tatro was divorced yesterday from his wife Mary Tatro.

To the citizens of the village of Chesterton, Westchester township,
Porter County, Indiana and all others whom it may concern: C. A.
Anderson, a male inhabitant over twenty one years of age, and a resident
of the village of Chesterton in Westchester township, Porter County,
Indiana, desiring to sell liquors as hereafter mentioned, hereby gives
notice to the citizens of said village of Chesterton, and Westchester
township, that he will make application to the Board of Commissioners,
of Porter County, at their December term, 1885, for license to sell
spirits, vinous, and malt liquors in less quantities than a quart at a
time, with the privilege of permitting the same to be drank on the
premises where sold.
His place of business and the place where said liquors are to be sold
and drank are as follows to wit: Lot number six (6), in block number
three (3) now called Chesterton, on the first floor of the building
situated thereon, being in the town of Chesterton in Westchester
Township, Porter county, Indiana.
