ALVIN WITTE DIES AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT
Alvin Witte, 20 year old son of Mrs. Laura Witte, died Monday morning at
9 oclock in St. Antonios Hospital, Gary, from injuries received when
the Witte sedan was struck by another car on state road 6 one-half mile
east of the McCool flying field.
Alvin was returning home alone on state road 6 about 12:15 a.m. Monday
morning. He started to pass a car ahead of him but when he saw a car approaching
from the opposite direction he apparently decided to try to turn into the
ditch to the left of the road rather than fall back into line behind the
car.
The approaching car was driven by Henry Tuft of Gary, who suffered a cut
on the forehead and was taken with Witte to St. Antonios Hospital at Gary
by a passing motorist. Tuft was not seriously injured and was released
as soon as his cuts were dressed.
Alvin never regained consciousness, although he was able to get out of
the car after the collision. He died at 9 oclock Monday morning with a
double fracture of the skull.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 oclock from St. Johns
Evangelical Church with the pastor, Rev. W. Grabowski, officiating. Burial
will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
Alvin Witte was born on Sept. 18, 1909 in Trinidad, Colorado, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Witte. His father passed away in 1911. The mother came
with her children to Chesterton about 10 years ago, and Alvin attended
our schools, graduating from Chesterton High School in 1928.
He was well known during his high school days as an athlete and continued
playing basketball and baseball after leaving school. He pitched part of
the game Sunday against Kouts.
He is survived by the mother, Mrs. Laura Witte, one sister Lucille, and
three brothers, Silver, Harley and Leonard.
The entire community was shocked to learn of his untimely death and express
their sympathy to the bereaved mother, sister and brothers.
