The Election
Frederick Bustrom Elected Westchester Trustee.
Monday's election decided that Frederick Bustrom will be Westchester's
Trustee for the succeeding two years. Of course this was in one sense,
a surprise to many, and again it was a result expected. Mr. Bustrom's
election was due to the fact that he is possessed of an irreproachable
character, and in receiving almost the undivided support of the Swedish
people. This township gives 200 republican majority when the party
lines are drawn, and the fact that Mr. Bustrom received a majority of
only 35, shows how popular was his opponent, Mr. John T. Morgan. The
state of affairs here this election was extremely complicated. Mr.
Morgan accepted the Democratic nomination only when pressed to do so by
republicans as well as democrats. After his nomination, the regular
republican caucus was held. Three republicans worked for that
nomination. Harper was nominated. Than a few interested parties bolted
the convention, called another one at Hageman, stirred up the strife
between the two towns, asserted that Democrats had nominated Harper, and
finally put the strongest man in the second precinct to oppose Morgan.
Personal friendship for Mr. Bustrom over-balanced party fealty, and the
regular republican nominee was slaughtered.
The Tribune is, and was a warm supporter of Mr. Morgan, but bowing to
the will of the majority gracefully accepts the situation, knowing that
in Mr. Bustrom, the township has a competent trustee.
Liberty township elected Mr. Fred Linderman, (Dem.) by 1 majority, the
vote being 100 for Chas. Benke, and 101 for Mr. Linderman.
In Pine township, Mr. Boone got reelected by the skin of his teeth,
receiving but 1 majority over his opponent, Mr. Kemper. Of course, one
vote is as good as a thousand, but it shows how desperately the
elections were fought and how evenly divided the people stand.
Center township (Valparaiso) elected David Turner, the republican
candidate for Trustee by over 100 majority.
At Michigan City Nilson F. Demming was elected Trustee on the citizens
by 169 majority. The democratic candidate, John Debre, owes his defeat
to the united opposition of the Knights of Labor.
At Laporte the Democrats elected Christian Houser trustee over Benny Ash
by 83 majority.
Hammond elected C.N. Towle, republican for Trustee; Fort Wayne went 400
republican, in former years it went 3000 Democratic; Evansville went
republican, Elkhart, Democratic.
A card
Fellow Citizens:
Friends, and neighbors of Westchester township, Porter county, state of
Indiana. I take the opportunity, through the columns of the Chesterton
Tribune, to return to you, one and all, my sincere thanks for the honor
that you have conferred upon me, in choosing me for your Assessor for
the next four years. I certainly did not expect such a unanimious vote
as you have given me at the late election. I feel proud to think that
my fellow citizens appreciate my services; as the vote of Monday proves.
There were 542 votes cast in the township; and I had the honor of
receiving 540 of those. I take this as a proof that you have been
satisfied with my work during the past two years, that I served you.
And I assure you, that I shall make it a point in the future, as in the
past, to do my duty, my whole duty, and nothing outside of my duty.
This is the year that, the real estate has to be reappraised, as well as
the improvement; and I can assure you, that it will not be an easy, or
an agreeable task.
The office of, and duties of an assessor are not as an agreeable
occupation as many would suppose. There are many difficult questions to
decide; and should I err, remember that to err is human but to forgive
is divine. You have your redress. The board of equalization meets on
the first Monday of June, at which you will have the privilege, of being
heard, should you feel aggrieved, at any erroneous assessment I may
happen to make. You will each be presented with a statement of your
real estate assessment; and also a notice of the time and place of the
meeting of said Board. All I ask of you fellow citizens, is to do your
part, in the work before us, as assessor and assessed; and by so doing
and working in harmony, we will be encouraged in the work.
Again fellow citizens, I thank you for the honor conferred upon me,
knowing as I do; that I never asked one of you to vote for me; but that
is was a free will offering on your part.
