The Burdick cemetery transcriptions (there are at least three
versions) attribute several children's stones in Burdick cemetery to
what I believe is the wrong family. I'm on a mini-crusade to
determine who these children really belong to and I wonder if anyone
has already figured it out. Here's the dilemma, any help would be
appreciated:
There is a BARNES family stone, in front of which are individual
stones for five members of the August Barnes family. These would be
the parents, Augustus and Louisa (LEETS) Barnes. Three children's
stones are in a row with them. These are Ida L., John S., and Lulah
M.. The stones show full names and dates.
In a row slightly behind the Barnes family stone are a number of what
I consider "baby" stones (the small, rectangular, upright-type).
Several of these have no names or dates at all (it doesn't appear that
they ever did). There are five similar markers which have just first
names on them. These are the five which I believe are incorrectly
attributed to the BARNES family. They are as follow: James, Mary,
Julia, Rosa, Harrison. At least these five are obviously the same
family.
I've always been skeptical that these children belong to Augustus and
Louisa. I now have obituaries for both of these parents, with each
indicating only six children born to them, three of whom died in
infancy -- those three being accounted for by the Ida, John and Lulah
stones. I've also accounted for their living children.
So, now that I've determined that these children do not belong to my
BARNES family, I'd like to get the record straight so that anyone
looking for these children might be able to locate them. Following
are some clues which might help to identify the correct family:
The family names (those which are legible) surrounding these baby
stones are GOODWIN, WILMER, and HARMON. The Goodwin stones include;
John M. Goodwin, M.D., (1812-1892), "Mother" Goodwin, (1819-1913),
William H. Goodwin (1847-1921), Anna V. Goodwin (1851-1931), Chas. H.
Goodwin (1876-1905), Mabel M. Goodwin (1904-1915).
The WILMER stone reads "Montie, son of W & L Wilmer".
Also nearby is HARMON - "Mary E., wife of E.R. HARMON, 1828-1896)
Sorry that this explanation is so long-winded, but I didn't know how
else to get all of the details in. Has anyone previously figured this
out, or are you looking for children with these names who you've been
unable to locate?
I'd appreciate any and all clues to the identities of these children.
Thanks in advance.
