town surely needs one.
Wm. Lahayne is building a new fence around his house. It is rather
novel in its construction.
The frost of Monday night did but little damage. The fruit was not hurt
at all, and the prospects indicate a large crop.

Illinois Republicans are booming John A. Logan for the Presidency for
'88. Eastern republicans say that Blaine will be on hand again for the
first place. He is a member of the Knights of Labor, having joined a
local assembly in his own town some time ago. J.G. is bound to be a
Knight of some kind, if not a pruned one.

The jury on the Lindstrom suit, at Laporte last Wednesday - Friday,
agree to disagree, hence no verdict. That case is getting to be almost
as celebrated as the famous Tichbourne suit. Twice it has been in the
Porter Circuit Court, and once in Laporte County. Some of the best
legal talent in the state has been employed upon both sides, scores of
witnessed have testified. The costs are now up in the thousands, and
still no settlement of the difficulty. Being a family matter, it makes
the trouble all the more deplorable. The case will come up again at the
first opportunity.
Monday morning the track master of the west division of the Lake Shore
road placed between seventy-five and one hundred men at work to reduce
two heavy grades of the road between Burdick and Laporte. The grades
are each about one-half mile long, and the track will be lowered about
three feet. When the work is completed it will do away with the
services of an engine that has heretofore been kept in "readiness" and
used in pushing heavy freight trains over those grades.
