Chesterton Tribune - December 24, 1885
NEW YEARS ALMOST HERE
Another week in which to select Gifts and Keep-Sakes
Places Where the General Public can find What it wants.
Do you know that in just one week and a day it is New Year's day, 1886.
Of course you know it. But then doesn't it seem strange how quickly New
Year's day comes again after New Year's goes. This fact certainly does
impress you, unless you are a very young person. To the young lady or
gentleman whose years are less than ten, New Year's days seem far and
far between, - But after we once get past the twentieth New Year's day,
they come thick and fast and furious. But this article did not set out
to be fine writing about New Year's, but rather to give some jolly
notices of THE TRIBUNE's advertisers.
Beginning on Michigan street, north side comes E.F. Schaper, the dealer
in jewelry, silver-ware, watches, etc. Ed is an enterprising business
man, who has firm faith in the north side, and is working like a beaver.
He owns the building he occupies, and contemplates more improvements.
He has a beautiful stock of fine jewelry, and his collection of
silver-ware is varied and handsome. He sells a great many gold and
silver watches, and sells them as cheap as they can be purchased in
Chicago, and always gives satisfaction.
Just across the railroad going south is located that sedate and
gentlemanly Undertaker and Furniture dealer, J.B. Lundberg. You very
rarely see his name in the paper, outside of his standing advertisement,
unless it mentions him in connection with the County Commissioner's
office. The reason is that he moves along life's beaten track as
quietly as if on cushioned rollers. Always on hand when wanted, never
in the way, he has grown to be a fixture in the town that could not be
dispensed with. Whenever any movement is on foot for public good, J. B.
Lundberg says but little, but puts his shoulder to the wheel and does
his part. His stock of furniture is large and well selected.
Our next advertisers are Quick Bros. These gentlemen keep a large stock
of hardware and agricultural implements. Both are public-spirited men,
blunt in the extreme, but when either of them tell you a thing, you can
just bet your last cent that it is so. They do a large business and
keep a varied stock. Call on them and see their stoves.
And what shall we say of Jno. Bergstrom, the Shoemaker. We might make a
joke or two about John, but he is dangerous. He likes a joke first
rate, when it is on the other fellow, but he has never fully forgiven
the TRIBUNE for a quib at his expense about a year ago-how time does get
up and get. The TRIBUNE can however consciously state that Mr.
Bergstrom makes as nice fitting foot wear as any one need wish. Call on
him.
Taylor Bros', General Merchandise, on the corner of Main and Michigan
streets are an old established firm. The post office is in their store.
They keep a full stock of general merchandise. Under other
circumstances more would be said in reference to this firm, but it is
uncalled for.
The firm of Green & Harper now claims our attention. They keep a full
stock of drugs, medicines, paints, oils, books, stationery, toys, etc.
Dr. H. Green, the senior partner of this firm is truly one of nature's
noblemen. Kind, generous to a fault, and public-spirited. He is the
pioneer druggist and physician of the township. Twice he has been
elected to the office of Trustee (which he still holds) on the Greenback
ticket, and that too, in a township of 250 republican majority. This
fact, of itself speaks louder than words, of his popularity. Many a
family in this township can join with us in thanking Dr. H. Green for
services that can never be paid with money, for it was he who saved our
darling babe from the grave when it seemed impossible to keep her out of
it. But there is no need to tell of his kindness. It is known by all.
Mr. S.A. Harper, the junior member of the firm, with is a talented young
business man, with much experience. Under his supervision the Old Eagle
store fairly groans, so heavily is it loaded with elegant holiday goods.
If you want to secure a present and don't know just what to buy, look
over the display at Green & Harpers.
At the foot of Main St., you will find Hylander Bros. grocers. They are
good natured gentlemen, attending strictly to business. Charles
Hylander one of the firm, is a solid chunk of good-nature. In fact he
is a living, breathing, standing and sitting representation to the good
sold. He likes a joke once in a while, but not too often. But the have
a well selected stock of general merchandise, and are polite and
obliging not only at Christmas time and Fourth of July occasions, but
upon every day between Christmas and Christmas besides. Drop in and see
them.
A.L. Harper, Hardware and Agricultural Implement dealer, is an
enterprising man, who carries a fine stock and does a large business.
He is a heavy advertiser. If you want anything from a bird cage to a
family carriage, or a house and lot, A. L. can fit you out on very short
notice. In addition to other things, he has added a wood and coal yard,
and can supply fuel as well as stoves. He also writes policies for
insurance and is agent for a number of reliable companies.
When this article was commences we intended going clear around, but our
space is exhausted, so we are obliged to put in a colon, and say "to be
continued in our next."
