Death of a Most Estimable Lady.
Valparaiso Vidette - Mrs. W. H. Banta died at her home in this city at ten minutes past 11
o'clock last night, of puerperile fever.
Rhoda Bates was a daughter of Hail Bates, Sr., and has been known in this county and
community from childhood as one possessed of much more than ordinary ability and genius.
In girlhood when he was a pupil in the V. M. & F., College, from which institution she
graduated and of which she was a subsequent preceptress, her lofty bearing and aspiration
gave her position as a leading star in the circle of her associates.
Shortly after her marriage to Prof. Wm. H. Banta, the latter was offered the positon of
superintendant and principal of the city public and high schools which he accepted and
still holds, and in which the beloved companion now he mourns proved inestimably valuable
to him in times of greatest perplexity and need.
As a citizen and friend, as in other regards the deceased was most high esteemed.
Socially, with her superior acquirements, she was exceedingly interesting. She was a
prominent member of the Parnassus club, an organization three years old of society-living
people, of which she was one of the brightest lights, the first president, and alas
"Death loves a shining star!" the first to break the happy circle.
She leaves besides her husband, two daughters and an infant son, one sister and a brother
to mourn her loss.
She was a constant Christian lady and for many years an active member of the M. E. Church
of this city, from which place the funeral will occur on Monday next at 11 o'clock
a.m.
