I am wondering if anyone on this board might have a
connection to my Indiana Thiels. My immigrant ancestor
was Theodore Thiel. I do not know his year of
immigration, but I find him first in the 1860 census
with his wife Elsbe (Elsby/Elsba?), nee Tofte, and son, Milton, at Eagle
Creek Township, Lake Co., IN. In the various census
records his place of birth is either Saxony or
Prussia. In 1860, he is 36 years old and his son,
Milton, of 8 months was born in IN.
Theodore was a civil war soldier under the name Theil.
In the 1870 census, this family is still living in
Eagle Creek Township and has the following children:
Milton
Albert
Bernhard
Theodore
Sherman
In January of 1880, son Milton married Annie Kep(p)ert in
Chicago. They and Theodore's family are living in Hebron village, Boone Township,
Porter Co., IN in the 1880 census.
Theodore died in 1897 in Hebron Town, Boone, Porter
Co., IN. His wife survived him and appears there in
the 1900 census.
Milton and Annie/Anna had children: Theodore, Elsie
and Edward; perhaps others. They lived in Hebron on a farm on Rt 2 until circa 1920.
I am trying to figure out the details of Theodore's immigration, and a marriage record
for Theodore and Elsbe. I just discovered Elsbe is buried in the Hebron Cemetery, and I
would love to have a photo of her headstone. She died in 1907.
Attached is an old postcard depicting damage in Hebron from a cyclone in 1917. I hope to
hear from someone.
