There will be a Strawberry Festival in the Gustafson building, up
stairs, Saturday evening next, given by the M. E. Church folks, for the
benefit of their pastor, Rev. Z. Lambert. All are invited to attend and
have a pleasant time.
"Princess Viroquia", an Indian Doctress, who has been practicing in
Valparaiso, has with her family gone into the concert business. Their
first opening was at Laporte and from there, they went to Michigan City.
What success they had we have not learned.
A. W. Blaes is now in South Bend.
Mr. Albert Rose, of Valparaiso, was in town Wednesday.
Three months of Democratic rule today, and so far but one Democratic
postmaster in Porter County.
Some Normal students from Valparaiso talk of giving an entertainment in
this place in the near future.
Jno. Bergstrom has moved his shoe shop into his own building, on
Michigan st., Dr. Macomber having moved out. Mr. Bergstrom is still
making first class boots and shoes, does general repairing, and invites
his old customers to give him a call.
Last week A. M. Nelson and Eric Peterson got into a dispute over money
matters which ended in Peterson causing this arrest of Nelson for
threatening his life. The case was tried last Thursday evening before
Squire Gondring which resulted in the acquittal of Nelson.
Mr. Wm. C. Hughes, of Detroit, Mich., a former resident of this county
and a brother-in-law of Henry Hageman, was on our streets yesterday.
Mr. Hughes is a miller by trade, and he has been over a good part of our
county in the past few days, and says the prospect for a good wheat crop
is very flattering.
The half yearly appointment of the state school revenue for tuition was
made yesterday. The returns of the spring enumeration show 740,171
persons of school age in the state. The amount apportioned to each
pupil is $1.42, which with $10,000 to the State Normal School, makes the
total amount $1,061,042.82.
Mr. Chas. Allen, of Valparaiso, with is mother, Mrs. Dr. Allen, were in
Chesterton last Monday. Mrs. Allen is, we learn, a lady of wide
experience in medicine, and a splendid physician. She has made her home
in Valparaiso, but will visit Chesterton one day each week (Fridays) to
treat those who may require her services.
Dr. Green went Monday to Valparaiso to let the contract for the
rebuilding of two bridges, one known as the Howe bridge, in Baileytown,
and the other across the creek on the new road east of the old saw mill
north of town, and also for putting in a culvert in place of the bridge
near Ed. Schaper's jewelery store. As trustee, Dr. Green has just
received a car load of tiling to be used in the roadways, and will put
it where it will do the most good, as rapidly as possible.
