Chesterton Tribune - June 18, 1885 cont
Lake Station
Everybody hereabouts got worms in their corn.
Patterson Bros. will sell liquors by the quart.
Miss Ida Chey has been at home for a few days.
E. S. Spencer sold his ponies to Hobart parties for $185.
It was reported last week that Prof. Shuman was married, but it was a
little premature.
Phillip Schneider has completed a fine new residence just out of town.
Thos. Lincoln ships large quantities of milk from here to the Chicago
suburbs.
A grand german was held in the new barn on Josephus Wolf at the
residence of Hans Roweter, all day Sunday and night and is still in
progress.
Geo. Ritter, east of Lake, has put nearly all the roads in his district
in race track order with that new road grader.
Considerable ill feeling has been engendered between some of the
business men of Lake which bids fair to end in prices which will be in
the end detrimental to all. Better live and let live, this is a big
world and you cannot take any of your wealth when you leave it.
Salt Creek
It has been some time since your Salt Creek scribe has dipped his pen in
the ink to give the doings of Salt Creekers; but now as the weather is
quite nice, and a good chance for people to think of the past, I thought
it was quite time for me to resume my old habits.
Miller Blachly made a business trip to Michigan City one day last week.
John Babcock got one of his horses badly injured by getting caught in a
barb wire fence. There is no doubt but it will be a long time before he
can use his horse, and if he ever can it will hurt the sale of it
probably $50.
Our blacksmith is kept quite busy these days; he can hardly find the
time to go fishing - but when he does go he never fails to get the fish.
Martin Young and wife, of Chesterton, passed through here bound for
Twenty Mile Prairie. Judging from the smile he had on his countenance
he must have struck something rich in the line of fat cattle for his
market.
Phil Daly has been the looser of two fine blooded calves of late. The
disease unknown.
Our school closed this week. Perfect satisfaction to all, no complaints
what ever.
The farmers have nothing to grumble about this summer. Corn looks
splendid; wheat is fair to choice; oats good, and in fact all kinds of
garden vegetables look well.
Mr. Bloom, our blacksmith, had one brother and sister just come over
from the old country and arrived at this place last week.
Mr. Benke has his addition to his house nearly completed. Martin Horrock
is doing the carpenter work.
Our genial Supervisor, Daniel Daly, is doing a good work on the roads.
Dan is the right man in the right place.
The Blachly Bros. are doing a good business at their mill. They have
about all they can do all the time. I nearly forgot I saw them coming
from Chesterton with a brand new set of harness.
The Trover Bros. of Whiting, were at this place making a visit with our
merchant, C.P. Trover, one day last week.
Many of the farmers are complaining about the woodchuck destroying their
meadows. Now as some of the commissioners are farmers, and seeing that
they have the right to fix a bounty on them, which they have not yet
done, and if they would fix a bounty not over 50 cts, I think it would
not be long before we would get rid of the pests.
