For those interested, I am willing to do look-ups in several of the
early Porter County, Indiana, newspapers. I own microfilm roll copies of
the following:
Chesterton Tribune (also known for a time as simply The Tribune) -
Chesterton, Indiana
October 28, 1882 through April 1, 1937
Western Ranger - Valparaiso, Indiana
April 10, 1847 through July 25, 1849
Practical Observer - Valparaiso, Indiana
April 1, 1849 through April 7, 1857
Porter County Vidette - Valparaiso, Indiana
June 4, 1874 through December 31, 1885
I've been hesitant to offer look-ups since I could become quickly
overwhelmed with requests. Therefore, I asking that all requests be
standardized to some extent, with a date or approximate date *required*
for a look-up. Please include the following information when you
request....
NAME: given name(s) and surname(s) [include possible alternate spellings
if known]
DATE OF EVENT: month and year [and day if known] - I will search no more
than five issues before and after the date you specify
TYPE OF EVENT: birth, death, marriage, other
If I find a match, then I will transcribe the entire newspaper item and
email it to you with full citation included [newspaper, date, volume
number, issue number, page number, column number]. All requests will be
handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
For those interested, microfilm rolls of these newspapers can be ordered
from UMI [

Also, I maintain a website devoted strictly to Liberty Township in
Porter County, Indiana. It includes newspaper items, as well, under the
