The Lembke Hotel was on the southwest corner of Lafayette and Jefferson
streets in downtown Valparaiso. The hotel's main door faced east onto Lafayette.
The Lembke was a half block off Lincolnway (the main street through the
downtown), behind and across an alley from Harvey's Dime Store, which was
located on Lincolnway kiddy-corner from the Premier Theater. In the 1960's,
there was a long exterior concrete stairway leading from the front north
corner of the hotel building, down to a basement door. This basement space
was designated as a fall-out shelter, with a prominent radioactivity sign
placed on the north wall of the hotel along the sidewalk. On the first
floor of the hotel, just inside the entrance, was a nice dining room, which
was still operating in the middle 1960's.
