CRISMAN
In response to the call made for a caucus, the republicans of Portage
township met in Blake's school house on Thursday afternoon, March 25th. The
attendance was not large, although the weather was almost perfect for the
month of March. D.P. Blake was elected Chairman of the meeting, and Stanton
Miller, Secretary. The following is the ticket:
Trustee A.J. Harrison; Assessor, Addison Crisman; Constable, Stephen Curtis;
The several Road Supervisors will be nominated on election morning, with the
exception of district No. 5, which nominated Jacob Lenburg, Jr. It is well
understood that several independent candidates will be in the field for the
office of Assessor.
John Olson, who has been attending the Normal school since November, spent
vacation with his parents at this place.
The long-looked-for "boom" has at last struck this town. The M.C. Railway
Co., is building a beautiful house which will be an ornament to the place.
H.D. Scofield is building a dwelling house, and other parties will soon
follow suit.
Jos. White disposed of all his real estate to Oscar Field. Consideration
$5000. Mr. Field will erect four cottages and a store building. "Rah for
Chrisman.
Jos. White and family will emigrate to Dakota on or about the 10th of April.
Mr. White has ever been a good citizen; a life-long republican, and his many
friends can but wish him a long and happy life in the land of "Blizzards."
Dr. Miller, of Chesterton, made several calls on the sick of this
neighborhood last week.
LAKE STATION
Superintendent F.E. Cooper, was in town a short time Thursday.
Two valuable cows of John Harrison's died last week.
E.E. Willis, of Effingham, Ill., shook hands with friends in this vicinity
last Thursday eve.
Abe Patterson is remodeling his storeroom and intends soon to add a stock of
wines and liquors, to sell at retail. If saloons continue to increase here
in the future as they are doing at present, it will not be long until each
of our population will be buying his drink at wholesale.
Mrs. Chas. Seydel has been very sick the past few days and a Chicago
physician was sent for.
Sam Cooling and family, have moved to Chicago.
JACKSON CENTER
There was no church Sunday afternoon on account of the storm.
Mrs. John Taylor is quite sick.
We see that Mr. Deming is able to be around again.
Mary Schroeder and Sophia Schroder visited at John Brewer's, Monday, with
their sister Ida.
They had a racket at Sumanville, Friday night, but they kept it very still.
Mrs. M. Barclay, of Chicago, is out here for the benefit of her health. She
has been failing for some. Her many friends hope she will soon recover.
Schuyler Carter is firing the engine at the Sumanville pump house. Mr. C.
is the daisy fireman.
Mr. George Brown and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. John Cain were the guests of
Joseph Brown, Sunday.

As I have been proposed as a candidate for Township Trustee, I wish to say,
I have never sought the office. But if elected, I will serve to the best of
my ability. The reports that John T. Taylor would be my Deputy, false and
without foundation. If elected, I will not need any deputy.
What others may have said in the past, I am nor responsible for.

We would suggest that the new party started in Westchester be called "The
Marrers" after that patron saint, Dr. Marr. If Dr. Marr needs any pointers
about how to conduct a first class rebellion, we would advise him to consult
Jeff Davis. He understands all about the art of ceceeding, and making
rebels.
The bill to increase the pensions of widows and dependent survivors of
deceased soldiers from $8 to $12 per month has passed both houses of
Congress, and has become a law, the president having signed it.
The Tribune, with this issue commences its third volume, under present
management.
