Lots west of the Foundry for sale by H. Bowen.
This year the 4th of July falls on Sunday. In Chesterton the celebration
comes on that day.
A new sidewalk has been put down in front of Harbrecht & German's Saloon.
Some time ago a fellow from Valparaiso claimed to have lost a five dollar
gold piece under this sidewalk. If he will apply at this office, he may
hear something of his money.
Last Friday being the birthday of Mrs. Martin Young a party of friends of
that lady to the number of about 40 gathered at her residence to spend the
evening with her. The affair was a very pleasant surprise and thoroughly
enjoyed by all in attendance. Mrs. Young was the recipient of a number of
handsome presents, given as souvenirs of the occasion.
The Indiana committee of the National Association wishes to correspond with
teacher from Indiana about the July meeting. It is earnestly decided that
all such will send name and address to those two well known, good looking,
and genial Hoosiers, Harry G. Wilson and J. Williamson, Topeka, Kansas. Let
the Hoosier roll be called and "git a plenty while you're a gittin".
Topeka, (Kan.) Capital.
A new counterfeit $2 will be in circulation. It is marked as of the series
of 1880, letter D, medallion of Jefferson in the corner, and indistinct
representation of the capital in the center. The surface of the note is
poor, and there is an "i" for "y" in the signature of Wyman, the
treasurer.
The word "tender" is in big type, but the "t" is not crossed.
The Bell Telephone Company of Valparaiso have at last come to ________, and
will keep their exchange, at this point in operation. Another telephone
company proposed putting phones in this town, charging a toll of 5 cts, per
call, and subscribers paying only for such service as they actually _____.
Just a day or so after everything had been arranged for the new company, the
manger of the Bell telephone Company went around to its old members and
offered its service on the same terms. The offer was accepted and now the
Bell telephone is again in general use. The part of this company has been a
game of bluff, but when they saw the thing wouldn't work, they quietly came
to terms.
Messers. W.W. I. Talcott of Washington township and Beach of Valparaiso,
made this office a pleasant call on Monday last. These gentlemen are
canvassing the county in the interest of the Porter County Agricultural
Society, for the fair to be held on September 14th to 17th inclusive in
Valparaiso. The fair grounds are now quite extensive, there being some 40
acres added on the east side, and make a fine place for the people to
congregate once a year to greet each other and view the finest specimens of
the products of the soil. The people of this county owe a great deal to the
management of the agricultural society. Only
the untiring efforts of the officers of this society saved the enterprise
from going to pieces long ago. So zealous were they in their work year
after year they even bought tickets for themselves and families to see the
exhibits. They worked early and late, met disappointments cheerfully,
seldom grew discouraged, and firmly overcame everything, until today, the
"Fair" is a permanent institution. The grounds are large, and well adapted
to their uses, and they are paid for. No debts of any consequence are held
against the society, and the standing of the Porter County Fair is first
class throughout the country. Our county of course cannot compete with some
more favored ones, for a law happens to be on our statue, giving to "fairs"
in counties having over twenty million dollars of taxable property, a yearly
income of $________. No provision was made for counties who do not come up
to this standard so Porter is left out. Our fair grounds need at least
$10,000 worth of new buildings. The association has now after getting the
necessary ground, stated out to get the new buildings. It is a big
undertaking and will take years to accomplish the end in view. But the
people of this county should make the burden lighter by having a willing,
helping hand, and give not only their moral, but financial support to the
society.
