Alton Goin, president of the Portage Community Historical Society, is looking
for anyone with information about the JAMES/SCHROCK Cemetery. The cemetery is
located behind Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park on McCool Road in Portage and
has suffered significant vandalism over the years.
Assisting so far in the restoration efforts have been the Portage High School
Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and the apprentice program of the
Bricklayers Local 4.
Among the 40 or so buried there between 1836 and 1884, less than half have
been identified. There are members of the James, Schrock, Allen, Wolf, Stoner,
Hockelberg, Griffen, Irwin, Worman, Kuill, Kuhl, Kern and Dorr families buried
in the cemetery, which also overlooks the Indiana Toll Road.
Mr. Goin asks that anyone with information on the site contact him at (219)
762-3825 or the parks department at 762-1675.
