LEONARD E. WITTE, WELL KNOWN LOCAL SPORTS FIGURE, DIES SUNDAY
Leonard E. Witte, 62, 123 S. 11th St., who has been active in local sports
for years, died unexpectedly Sunday evening in his home after suffering
a heart attack.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Carl Edmonds Funeral
Home with the Rev. James F. Thomas of the First E.U.B. church of Porter
officiating, and burial will be in Chesterton cemetery. Friends may call
at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday and until 11 a.m. Thursday.
Mr. Witte spent Sunday afternoon at the Chesterton Independents game in
Morgan township and became ill on the way home from the game. He suffered
an attack as he was preparing to go to bed at about 8:30 p.m.
He was the manager and organizer of the Independents, which played its
first regular game Sunday, and Mr. Witte is well known as a baseball umpire,
having been an official at games throughout this area for several years.
Mr. Witte had been active in the State Park Little League and had been
an organizer of several athletic clubs. He was a fan of C.H.S. basketball,
and was frequently in attendance at the local high school games, and attended
C.H.S. baseball games.
Mr. Witte was born Aug. 8, 1899 in Chicago, the son of Albert and Laura
(Ritenour) Witte, and on July 1, 1939 in Chesterton he was married to Luella
Sinclair, who survives.
Surviving besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Linda (Dale) Hodges
of Chesterton, and twins, Pamela and Penny at home, two brothers, Silver
and Harley Witte of Chesterton, and a sister, Mrs. Edward (Lucille) Cheesbrough
of Overland Park, Kansas.
He had worked as a power clerk for Universal Atlas Cement Co. at Buffington
for more than 40 years.
