SOCIAL DOINGS
W.B.A. Enjoys Birthday Party Tuesday Evening
The W. B. A. birthday party was held Tuesday evening at the hall.
Honored guests were Mrs. William LaHayne, Mrs. Lillie Irwin and Mrs. Eric
Settlemire. Pedro was played at three tables and prizes won by Mrs.
Charles Wallin and Mrs. Dena Sievert. At the close of the evening lovely
refreshments were served, including a large birthday cake, at tables
decorated in pink and white.
Bethlehem League Enjoys Hobo Party
The league enjoyed a hobo party at their meeting in the Bethlehem
Lutheran church Tuesday evening. William Anderson was in charge. On the
program were two solos by Kathleen Shelley and a report of the convention
at Cisco Beach, Wis., by Geraldine Johnson. Eleanor Anderson and Glenn
Nicholson received the awards for the best hobo costumes. A hobo lunch
was served on paper plates.
Past Matrons Meet With Mrs. Finnstrom
The Past Matrons met Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Norman Finnstrom
with Mrs. Chester Keeler entertaining. A brief business session was
held. Bunco was played and prized won by Mrs. Karl Simison, Mrs. William
Darman, Mrs. H. Flynn and Mrs. Rudolph Jannasch. Lovely refreshements
were served. Mrs. Luther Kelley will entertain next on September 17.
Local Ladies at Auxilary State Convention
Mrs. Hazel Stephens and Mrs. FLorence Reedy were the local delegates to
the American Legion Auxilary convention in Gary this week. The business
sessions were held on Monday and Tuesday.
Sunday morning at 7:30 the secretary's breakfast was held in the crystal
ballroom of the Gary Hotel. Local persons attending were Mrs. Stephens,
Mrs. Reedy, Mrs. Hilda Anderson, Mrs. Norma LaHayne, Mrs. Ethel
A. Carlson, Miss Mayme Flannery, Mrs. Lillie Irwin, and Mrs. Lillian
Johnson.
Sunday at noon a child welfare luncheon was held, also in the ballroom,
and the same local ladies attended.
On Monday evening, the past presidents' parley formal dinner was held in
the Marquette park pavilion. Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Reedy, Mrs. Anderson,
Mrrs. LaHayne, Mrs. Carlson, and Mrs. Johnson attended.
Mrs. Young of Crown Point was elected state president of the auxilary.

Aged Local Man Passes Away
Gottlieb Grieger, 85, passed away this Wednesday morning, Aug. 21 at
10:30 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Marquart.
Mr. Grieger was born June 8, 1855 in Germany. He came to America at the
age of 25 and spent a few years in Chicago and Michigan City. The rest
of his life was spent in Porter county. In 1883 he was united in
marriage to Minnie Rhordanz, who passed away in 1918 at the age of 54.
Mr. Grieger was employed for many years as a signal maintainer at
Crocker and was also in the grocery business in Crocker for a number of
years. He resided at the Marwuart home here and had been in ill health
for several years.
Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Bertha Marquart of Chesterton, Mrs.
Amelia Graubman of Chicago, Mrs. Martha Arndt and Mrs. Clara Mellings,
both of Gary; one son, Albert C. of Whiting; a brother, Ferdinand of
Michigan City; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangement are incomplete.
WEDDING BELLS
Yant-Demarest
Miss Beatrice Yant, a school teacher, and Lyman B. Demarest, Steel Mill
employee, both of East Chicago, were united in marriage Sunday, August
18, at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Henry M. Braun performed the ceremony at the Old
North church in Beverly Shores. Attendants were friends from East
Chicago.
This wedding was the first to be performed at the Old North Church.
Wozniak-Ruhe
Miss Dorothy Wozniak, who resided with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wozniak in
Chesterton, and Arthur Ruhe, son of Joseph Ruhe of McCool, were united in
marriage in St. Patrick's church at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 17. Rev. E.
F. Eisenhardt performed the single ring ceremony Attendants were Miss
Bessie Anderson of Chesterton and George Ruhe of McCool.
The bride wore a white lace gown and a long bridal veil. She carried a
large bouquet of white roses and baby breath.
Miss Anderson also wore white with blue accessories and carried blue
delphiniums.
Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served to the immediate
families at Trail-Inn on State road 6. The couple left immediately on a
short wedding trip following which they will make their home in McCool.
The groom is employed in the Gary tin mill.
Cole-Tratebas
Miss Evelyn Cole of R. R. 1, Chesterton, became the bride of John
Tratebas, of R. R. 1, Valparaiso, Saturday evening, August 17, at
ceremony at her home. Rev. Bertil
