I am trying to reconcile an account I found while researching
an old version of a History of Porter County. My ggg-grandfather left Massachusetts in
1835 for Indiana with the
hope of making a living as a merchant. We originally thought
that he went to Michigan City. While I do believe that there
was more than 1 Thomas Snow who resided in the area, I
think the other came a bit later. In this history which was
published in the early 1900s in the chapter on roads it
mentions a road to be built to Thomas Snow's store. Another
chapter dealing with the origin of the term Hoosier tells
of the first frame house in Union township which was
built by Thomas Snow and stocked with goods. The
date in that account is given as 1833. 2 years later, Thomas
sold out and I believe he then moved to Michigan City.
We do know that our ancestor did fail as a businessman
and sold out after a few years. Can anyone find out
if the 1833 date is incorrect? If the house was built in
1835, then this is my Thomas. TIA
