The Chesterton Tribune
December 17, 1885
The funeral services of Miss Jessie Owen were held at the Baptist Church in Englewood last Friday at one o'clock. It was the original intention to hold the services at the house, but long before the hour appointed, the rooms were filled, and it was decided to go to the church. The attendance was large, the floral offerings profuse, and were beauiful. Among the more noticible pieces were: A harp from Jessie's schoolmates. a lyre, gates ajar, and a wreath. the latter presented by Mrs. Young. There were present from Chesterton, Mrs. Dr. Marr, Mrs. Caldwell, Mrs. Young, Mrs.
Babcock, Miss Cora Green, Edwin Green and Chas. Williams. The casket was placed in the vault in Oakwood Cemetery.
Never has the death of a person living away from Chesterton called forth expressions of such universal sympathy and sorrow as does the death of Jessie Owen. Dear, lovely Jessie. She is ever before us. Full of life, and animation, radiant with earth's new wine of youth, beauty, and health, with a heart overflowing with kindness and good will to all. An only daughter, and the most loving and dutiful of children. No wonder the mother sits by her darkened hearth - mourning, and disconsolate, and the father, with bowed head, and bleeding heart, refused to be comforted. None but those who have suffered a like bereavment can realize the anguish, and heartbreak of the trial through which those parents are now passing. Words are powerless to alleviate sorrow such as theirs; yet those who know (and to know was to love) their daughter, cannot but express their sorrow, and pray that He who suffered like as we do, may pour the balm of healing love and hope on their wounded hearts,!
and lift their eyes from the snowcovered mound, underneath which lies only the mortal of their beautiful darling to that upper realm where in summer gladness, and amid flowers of perpetual bloom lovely Jessie, roams at will amid the heavenly bowers, nor dreams of aught by joy. - e.g.

Henry Dabbart, the Hageman Grocer, has just returned from Chicago where

sure and call on him before purchasing elsewhere.
Miss Kittie Moran, of Valparaiso, furnished music for the Catholic

Mr. Emil Swanson, of Swanson & Son, Tailors, left Tuesday morning for
Chicago. He has gone there to take instructions in cutting under Howe,

intends mastering all the branches of his trade, and is going at it in
the right way by placing himself under so eminent a master as Howe, the
Chicago Tailor. We wish him success.
In commissioners' court yesterday Isaiah McGinley was appointed
commissioner for a road petitioned to run on the Lake and Porter county
line. Messrs. Morgan, Friday and Fuller, viewers on a road petitioned
for by Henry Hacket et al., to run in Jackson and Pine townships
reported adversely and the report was confirmed. A report by viewers on
road petitioned for by A. E. Stowall et al., showed that they did not
meet on the day appointed, hence their action would be invalid and they
were reappointed with direction to meet again.
Charles Jones, a mulatto, who has been running a barber shop at David
Long's at Hageman staggered into the boarding house of Frank Ekland's
last Monday night, and asked for shelter, saying he was perishing. He
was admitted and given a bed. The next morning he was found to be
suffering from congestion of the lungs, brought on by exposure. The man
was out of money but Drs. Green and Miller went to his assistance. When
they reached him he was very low, and almost beyond medical help. Jones
came to Hageman about three weeks ago, and says he came from St. Paul,
Minn. He told the Drs. That he had a shop at that place, but was burned
out, and claims to have an insurance policy for $450 on the shop, and
$3000 on his life. He gave Dr. Green a case which he said contained his
papers, but no insurance papers could be found. All that was discovered
was a dunning letter from an insurance company for dues, dated August,
85. Jones' recovery is very improbable.

A simple means of drying wet boots is to fill them with oats and let
them stand near the fire over night. The oats absorb the moisture
leaving the boots nice and dry.

Messrs. West and Don Lytle, of Valparaiso, were down here a short time
ago, to see what encouragement would be given them in starting an ice
wagon in Chesterton. The Lytles are old and experienced ice-men, and
think Chesterton able to support the business. They are expected here
again soon, to settle definitely whether they will locate here or not.
The organ factory boys were perhaps the only people hereabouts who did
not know cold weather had arrived. During the coldest hours of last
Monday the windows were down, and inside the building everything looked
as though "no winter enters here." The factory is heated by miles of
steam pipes, and so thoroughly do they work, that 80 degrees is the
common temperature in the coldest weather. "The old man" as the boys
call Mr. Hillstrom, looks after the comfort of his employees.
Last week M. Henry Benson moved his family to Chicago. The loss of so
good a citizen as Mr. Benson is regretted, for while one of us, he was
not idle, but took pride in building up the town. The building now
occupied by C.A. Anderson was rebuilt, by him. Before he came here it
was an eyesore. He also built the bakery and a neat dwelling on the
north side. These improvements are permanent ones and though Mr. Benson
leaves they will remain. But he had continued a citizen here, of
course, improvements would have followed. We sincerely wish Mr. Benson
success in his new home.

Whenever you see the yellow lightning rod wagon, think of Milton
Crisman's experience and beware. They led him to believe, by oily talk,
that they would give all the points, balls, a vane, and 190 feet of rod
free, and then put it on the house and barn at a cost not to exceed $10.
They then produced a clearly worded contract to sign, which gave them
authority to put up as many feet as they choose at 75 cts. per foot.
When they finished their contract they presented him with a bill of $45.

Alonzo COTTON, who observed his 88th birthday anniversary on February 11, died at his home in Burdick Monday after an illness of about two weeks. He had suffered a paralytic stroke.
Mr. COTTON was born near Otis in 1952 and had lived in the Burdick community all his life. He was widely known in this area, where he had been engaged in farming and of late years had lived in the town of Burdick.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the index for Hackett Cemetery?
Samuel C. and Henry Hackett were the sons of my 3rd great grandmother,
Sarah/Sally COTTON, to Henry Hackett (sr). I've heard that there are also
COTTONs buried in this cemetery and I'm trying desperately to find James
COTTON, Willard A. COTTON, and Alonzo COTTON (who is listed on the 1920
census in Jackson Twp., Porter Co., IND.
James and Willard A. COTTON were both in Newbury Twp., LaGrange Co., IND in
1837 but disappeared by the 1840 census and I can't locate them. I suspect
Alonzo, b. abt. 1852, might be a son to one of them.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

John, FYI, there is an additional Edwin F. Way who is NOT the one you speak of, but appears to perhaps be your Edwin's uncle.
On the same 1870 census, on the page prior to your Edwin (who was household #64) in household #61 is Edwin Way and his wife Jemina, ages 28 & 18. In household #62 is Hiram Way, age 63. and apparently a son of Hiram's, John, age 22.
Household #63 is not a Way, but rather William Brummitt, the justice of the peace, and then #64 is your Charles/Flora/Edwin/etc Way family. #65 is the household of Lewis Grieger, who incidentally, in 1883, his wife's brother, Leon Martens, got into some trouble and Charles Way brought the brother-in-law back from Chicago to face Judge Brummitt. (that story being the reason I have a bit of info on your Way.)
For a bio on the OTHER Edwin F. Way, see the web page http://debmurray.tripod.com/porter/porbioref-2.htm#eway
PS, yes, I realized after I posted the previous mistake of refering to your GGM Flora as your mother. I suspect you saw around that error, but since I'm able to state the corrextion now, I shall.

John, I'm guessing the "Charles Way" was constable Charles F. Way, a farmer in Pine Township, whose wife on the 1870 census is listed as Florentine. (perhaps the reason for your mother's name of Flora.) On that census, Edwin F. Way is listed as nine years old. Charles was born in New York, his wife Florentine in Prussia, and Edwin and his three younger siblings in Indiana.
These people were in Furnessville, which for all intents and purposes geographical, can be considered to be closest to Michigan City, even though it is in the next county over. Perhaps they attended church in Michigan City, and therefore such marriage info would be in LaPorte County. FYI, while I don't see Edwin's obit on the News-Dispatch obit database, it shows one for Edwin's father and several for his mother, as well as many other Ways. ( http://www.mclib.org/obituary.htm )

Need info on forebears of Fred Berndt, b. 1862, who emigrated from Germany in 1892 with his wife, Lena Tews, b. 1864, and son Otto. Fred died in 1934. Lena died in 1954. If anyone has info on the parents, grandparents, etc. of Fred, please post a reply. I live in Carrollton, KY and can't make my 75 year old bones take that trip. Gene

I am trying to locate information on Edwin Way. My sister found an obituary for him that states he was born on Oct 6, 1961, Porter County, Indiana. His fahter was listed as Charles Way. Edwin was 79 years old when he died, so I suspect he died around 1940. His wife was named either Katherine or Catherine. I would like to locate either birth or marriage information for him. I am also interested in any children he had besides his daughter Flora. Flora is my great grandmother

Hi,
I am looking for the names and the locations of the surviving relatives from the obituary/death record of Matilda Barcome, who died in Porter County on Feb. 7, 1878.
I would appreciate any help.
