Can someone on this list shed any light on why all these persons split
for Neb. and Kan. during this timeframe?
We had a relative that was a vet of the Civil War from Ohio and moved to
Kan. for one year about 1878. We had wondered if maybe veterans got
some kind of land? They only stayed out there one year and went back
east to Michigan.
My brain says Oregon Trail but wasn't that earlier? Just wondering. I
probably should know, but me thinks my brain is froze! Thanks

This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it.

Surnames in this biography are: CRUMPACKER, Kroompacher, Friedrich, Windle, Unruh,
FREDERICK CHARLES CRUMPACKER. For upwards of half a century no name in Northern Indiana has stood for more in the legal profession and in public affairs than that of Crumpacker. Peter Crumpacker was an eminent attorney for many years. Best known among the older generation was Hon. Edgar Dean Crumpacker, who for many years was a representative from the Tenth District of Indiana in Congress. His ability and his long service brought him membership on the ways and means committee. Referring to his service, Speaker Nicholas Longworth said: “He was in those days recognized as a leader among strong men like Cannon, Clark, Payne, Dalzell, Grosvenor and Underwood, than which there could be no more convincing evidence that he was a statesman of parts and capacity.” Edgar D. Crumpacker was born near Kankakee, Illinois, but from the age of six years lived in Indiana, growing up in Lake and Porter counties. The Crumpacker family w!
as of Holland-Dutch ancestry. The first American was Hans Kroompacher, who sailed on the ship Hope from Holland in May, 1728, and settled in Pennsylvania. Later a branch of his family moved to Virginia. Theophilus Crumpacker, father of Edgar D., was born in Virginia, in 1823, and was a boy when the family moved west to Michigan and about 1836 settled in Indiana. Theophilus Crumpacker and wife are buried at Valparaiso. Edgar Dean Crumpacker attended public schools and was a pupil in the old Valparaiso Male and Female Institute, the predecessor of the Valparaiso University. He also acquired part of his education in Indiana University, studied law and in 1878 was admitted to the bar. He soon gained an enviable prominence in his profession at Valparaiso. He was appellate judge of Indiana from 1890 to 1892. He was in Congress from the Tenth District of Indiana for eight terms, from 1897 to 1913. He died at Valparaiso, May 27, 1920. He was a thirty-second deg!
ree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Christian Church. His wife, Charlotte Ann Lucas, was born and reared at Westville Indiana, attended school there and was a devout worker in the Christian Church. She died June 12, 1925, and both are buried at Valparaiso. These parents had three sons: Owen L., a leading lawyer of Valparaiso; Frederick Charles; and Maurice Edgar. Maurice Edgar Crumpacker died July 24, 1927, while in Congress. The official sketch of his life prepared by Congress was: Maurice Edgar Crumpacker was born in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, December 19, 1886; attended the public schools of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Washington, D. C.; was graduated from the Culver (lad.) Military Academy in 1905 and from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1909; studied law at Harvard University, was admitted to the bar in 1912, and commenced practice in Portland, Oregon; during the World war was commissioned on December 31, 1917, as first lieutenant in the!
aviation section of the Signal Reserve Corps; accepted appointment as captain in the Air Service (production), National Army, on July 8, 1918, and served until December 27, 1918, when he was honorably discharged as captain in the Air Service (aircraft production) special deputy district attorney for Multnomah County, Oregon, in 1921; unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress in 1922; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth and Seventieth Congresses, and served from March 4, 1925, until his death in San Francisco, California, July 24, 1927; interment in Riverview Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.” The chief in memoriam address delivered in Congress as a tribute to this young member from Oregon was by Speaker Longworth, who had served with his father on the ways and means committee and who counted Maurice Crumpacker one of his best friends. The following paragraphs are taken from Speaker Longworth’s address: After he left W!
ashington as a schoolboy his training was such as to admirably fit him for his chosen profession, that of the law, which brought him to Oregon. He graduated at the University of Michigan, with respectable record as a scholar and with that of an athlete of the first rank. From there he went to Cambridge and graduated at the Harvard Law School. The fact that I have been honored with a degree of Doctor of Laws, conferred by the University of Michigan, about the time I first knew him, and was a graduate of Harvard and had spent some time in the law school, brought us into even closer terms of intimacy. During the months he spent here in the short session before that in which he took the oath of office he exhibited a personality so compelling, and an ability and grasp of public affairs so apparent, that he was appointed at the regular session upon a major committee that on rivers and harbors—an honor infrequently achieved by any member at the beginning of his serv!
ice. As a member of that committee, and as a legislator generally, his industry was indefatigable. His services to his constituency were such that many a man who, I was told during my visit to Portland last summer, had looked upon him rather askance at the time of his first candidacy as more or less of an alien, was loud in his praise of Crumpacker as one of the best representatives his district ever had. Most of us here today, I venture to believe, are thinking of our late friend not so much as a statesman but as a man and companion. His flashing, friendly smile—his warm, pleasant voice—his booming, infectious laugh— made of him a unique personality. With a wit and a musical ability amounting almost to genius, he was everywhere in constant demand, and he gave of his gifts to his friends as generously as he gave to his constituents his willingness to toil. Who among us that were here on the day of adjournment of the last sessio!
n, as the Speaker’s gavel fell and partisan rancor gave place to hilarity and good will, and political opponents became in a moment brothers in arms, will forget the time our friend, in response to clamorous demands from all parts of this hall, sang the song that no man will ever again sing as he sang it—Rollin to the Sea! Of the end I dare not trust myself to speak. A soldier who had well and bravely served his country; a man of infinite courage and physical prowess; a representative in Congress at an age when most men are starting a political career—no one could have had brighter prospects. Practically assured of service to his constituency so long as it should please him, with probably even a higher place in prospect; a family whom he adored and by whom he was adored—he seemed to have everything to make life worth living. Yet his most intimate friends had known for many years that while he had his almost Olympian heights, h!
e had his depths also. While at most times he was on the top of the wave, at some times the undertow carried him off his feet. Black moments had to be lived through. There was a limit. His wife and three fine, sturdy young sons survive him. They loved him. They are proud of him. But in only greater degree than we, his colleagues here solemnly assembled to do honor to his memory. Frederick Charles Crumpacker was born at Valparaiso, September 16, 1881, and was therefore five years older than his distinguished younger brother. He graduated from the Valparaiso High School in 1899, took his A. B. Degree at the University of Michigan in 1908 and his law degree came from the University of Michigan Law School in 1905. He was admitted to the bar in December of that year, first practiced at Indiana Harbor and since 1906 has enjoyed a constantly increasing prestige for a quarter of a century. His partner in practice is Edwin H. Friedrich. This is one of the leading law firms!
of Northern Indiana. Their offices are in the Hammond. Building. In the early years of his practice Mr. Crumpacker was associated with his uncle, Peter Crumpacker, who died in 1918. Mr. Crumpacker is a member of the Lake County, Indiana State and American Bar Associations, is a Royal Arch Mason, member of the Hamilton Club of Chicago and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis, the Woodmar Country Club, is a past president of the local Rotary Club. Like other members of the Crumpacker family he is a staunch Republican and a member of the Christian Church. He married at Valparaiso, February 17, 1909, Miss Mary Windle, daughter of W. G. and Catherine (Unruh) Windle. Her father, now eighty-two years of age, is still the head of Windle & Son, an old established grocery house in Valparaiso. Mrs. Crumpacker attended grammar and high school in Valparaiso, Ferry Hall at Lake Forest, Illinois, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church. They have four children: Frederick Charles, Jr., Owe!
n W., Mary Jean and Marjorie Ann. The two daughters are in school at Hammond. The older son after graduating from the Hammond High School attended the Lawrenceville Preparatory School in New Jersey, and is a member of the class of 1932 at the University of Michigan, where he is studying law. Owen W. Crumpacker is also in the University Of Michigan. Mr. Crumpacker along with his practice has interested himself in civic affairs, and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He enjoys fishing and hunting and has an attractive summer home at Eagle River, Wisconsin.

FRIENDS:
This may not be news to some of you, but the 1880 census is available at
www.familysearch.com These persons were in Porter County in 1879 etc.
So many should appear on the census and the info from the index may help
you find more info.
For example: The above article - Born Al DeLaire, dau.
1880 census has an Alford Delare, living in Center, Porter, Indiana. He
is 31, wife is Mary, and they have a 7 month old daughter, Ettie.
Possibly same family.
Now the census spells it differently, but it says he was born in VT, and
his father was born in France. So DeLaire sounds really good. Having a
French name myself, I know how badly they were corrupted by the census
takers. Almost as bad as my German names.
Just a bit of info in case you are not aware that the census is online
and this info may help pinpoint your family.
Have a great day and keep warm, we are shivering in Michigan. brrr

My Great Grandmother Ella May Romine born (1859) in LaPort, In. married Jacob Woods. She was 17 when they got married in Benton County, Nov. 21, 1876.
They had Emma born August 15, 1877 aprox; Emery born August 14, 1878 aprox.; the Twin boys, Pearl and Carl 1879?; and when she was 5 months pregnant with the last boy Ray--her husband (sometimes called Jake) drowned in Lake Michigan (time frame 1881-83?).
Ella May put the boys in school, Emery was adopted out and Emma married the day before she was 15. Ella May went west and eventually remarried.
Emma married Frank Culligan and lived in Yanton South Dakota. She had one son named Arthur Culligan. Arthur could have been born any time from 1893 to 1900 that's when she wrote Ella.
Emery wrote Ella in 1900 to let her know that he was getting married and going on a honeymoon to Alaska. Never heard from him again and she presumed he had died.
I am looking for more information on the Woods children. Ella May said she was always sorry she lost track of her children and found it very difficult to talk about them.

I have recently posted online a website devoted exclusively to the
history and genealogy of Liberty Township in Porter County, Indiana. The
site is hosted by Rootsweb.com and can be accessed at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~incliber
I would appreciate any contributions that you may wish to add to the
website. I'm particarly interested in historical
photographs/postcards/images/scans of the area - such as Woodville (and
the B&O Station), Babcock Station, Salt Creek, Gossett's Mill, early
Crocker, etc. I'm also interested obtaining obituaries of individuals
buried in Kimball, Dillingham, or the Gossett-Hageman Cemeteries.
Comments and criticism always welcome!

Need formal name of the cemetery located about a mile south of Hebron on Indiana route 2/US 231. A local friend suggested that it is simply "the Hebron cemetery". That sounds too simple.
I assume it is a township managed cemetery (as I recall this is Boone Twp) but that's only a guess.
Any info appreciated.
