Hi Mike!
Looks like you really know how to do research.
I did get other information with my note that I would like to share.
Your info was from the 1860 census, check the 1850 one and
compare with the 1860. Da!
Also, I did get info on the 1840 census but can not seem to get on the right
page. The info was as follows:
1840 Pike Co. IN, p. 20/452 (p.231A) ln. 11 (10001-10001)?
May you can help.
Her is another Fact: I have been to Walnut Hill Cemetery in Petersburg, IN
and there is a grave identified as SPARTAN TRAYLOR . Next to Him is his wife
Mary Ann Traylor. This info is also online.
What was your gggGrandfathers name, the one that married Sally Traylor?
Again, THANKS,
Paul Traylor

P.S. How did you find the cemetery in which the two little girls are
buried.

Paul -
Saw your posting and decided to confuse you further. I don't think that the
names you have listed are even his real name. I have done quite a bit of
research
in Pike Co. and here is what I have on your "Pick a name" Traylor (er).
1860 Federal Census for Indiana
Spartan Traylor
Age - 49
Born - Georgia
Occupation - Engineer
Literate - Yes ***This is important - see below.
County - Pike
Township - Jefferson
Post Office - Petersburg
Family # - 164
Dwelling # - 171
Spouse - Mary Ann
Age - 40
Born - Indiana
Children (living)
William - 20
Croline - 18
George - 16
Priscilla - 13
John R. - 11 (listed as a female)
Emeline - 8
Mary - 1
All born in Indiana
Possible Children (dead)
Margaret O. - b.4/3/1855 d. 7/17/1858
Lucy Ann - b. 5/9/1850 d. 10/22/1856
Both buried at Chappell Cemetery, Jefferson Twnshp, Pike County
I checked the database for Indiana Marriages prior to 1850 for
a Laparton Trayler or a Spartan Traylor and came up with nothing.
However, there is a listing for a Barton Trayler.
Barton Trayler m. Mary Ann Chew 10/21/1839 in Pike County.
Interesting huh? Given the spelling that I have seen on the censuses
and given the fact that Barton (or whoever) would have signed his own
name on his marriage and he is listed as literate on the census, I
would probably go with the name on the marriage license, Barton. And
the "o" or the "e" in Traylor is easily confused with the handwriting
of the day.
As far as you question on Townships. Just as states are divided into
counties,
counties are divided into townships. It just make it easier to manage
things
like road repair, snow plowing, roadside mowing, etc.
Let me know if this is of any help or if I have confused you further. I do
have an interest in the Traylor - Trayler surname as my g-g-g-g-grandfather
married a Sally Trayler in 1839 and I suspect that she may be a sibling
of your person, whatever his name may be.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Mike Marten
