Hello again! I knew I had a reason for joining the Vanderburgh Co list
other than sending the wrong email to you :). Hello to all the other lists
as well. I am looking for Viehe, Milbratz, Holtman and Pieper descendants
who may want me to make copies of some old photos for them - I would have to
ask for copying costs and shipping expenses. Here is who I have:
1 photo with Charlotte Milbratz, Mrs. Helen Holtman, Mr. William F. Viehe,
Louise Viehe (wife of William), and Mrs. Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe (wife of
John H. Viehe) taken in 1934 in Evansville, Indiana.
1 photo of Helen Holtman, John H. Viehe, and Sarah Ellen McNabb Viehe - no
date nor location given

W. Viehe, Aunt Lou Viehe (Mrs. William F), Lucile Viehe (Mrs. John E),
Lucile Viehe and Uncle Billy Viehe (Williiam F).

Walter just arrived home from WWI

graduation from Indiana State University. No names given below photo but I

Pieper. 5 other individuals unnamed

approximately in his 40s or 50s)

1 studio photo of Robert W. Viehe - early teens

S.W. Douglas) - note, this may be Robert W. Viehe - they look a bit similar
Ok, it is Robert W. I can tell by the next picture I have :)
1 studio photo of Dr. Carl Viehe and Dr. Robert W. Viehe (Carl looks 30s,
Robert looks 20s)
1 studio photo of Dr. Robert W. Viehe (looks 20s or 30s)
1 studio photo of Anna Viehe (Mrs. Hiram Brown) taken in 1908 by G.L. Louis?
1 studio photo of Ella Viehe (Mrs. Markham Frederick) - no date, taken by
Sutuhuhng? She is wearing a nurses uniform
Ok, that's what I have. Here's the little info I have on these individuals:
1. John H. Viehe was born around 1862 in Indiana and moved to Pike County,
IN where he married Sarah Ellen McNabb. They only had one daughter Lucile
Viehe, who eventually married a Charles Krieg Failing. By 1910 the family
had moved to Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN.
2. William Frederick was born MAY 1857 in Indiana and lived in Evansville,
his wife Louise was born MAY 1862 in Indiana. They had two sons on the 1900
census - Robert W (b.JUL 1884 - probably the same as Dr. Robert W Viehe I
have pictures of above) and John B (b.MAR 1886 - probably the same person as
John E). In the 1900 census William Frederick was a Commercial Traveling
Grocer. In 1870 he and his sister Charlotte were not living with their
parents, but in Vigo Township, Knox County in the home of Frederic and Minni
Stelting. I have not found their parents anywhere in Vanderburgh Co or Knox
Co in 1870 census. There was a 6 month old Charles Viehe in the 1870 census
living with August and Mary Sager in Widner Township, Knox County (very near
another family of Steltings). It appears there must have been an emergency
or family disaster which caused the children to be spread to other
families - Charlotte is still living with this family in 1880! And Charles
is living with his aunt and uncle Frederick Berkemier and Caroline Viehe
Berkemier (born Prussia around 1840 according to the census) and his
grandfather Henry Viehe (born around 1803 in Prussia) in 1880. In 1880
William Frederick himself was living with Fred W. Viehe (his uncle) in
Vincennes, Knox County. In 1910 this family (William Frederick, wife and
children) was living at 420 Washington Avenue.
3. Charlotte Viehe, appears to have been the sister of William Frederick -
obviously married a Milbratz (as we see the first photo contains a Charlotte
Milbratz.) I'm also assuming Walter Milbratz therefore is her son.
Haven't found much on this family.
4. Louise Viehe Pieper appears to be a cousin or niece, rather than a sister
to John H Viehe, Here her, her children and her father are in the 1920
Census - Vigo TWP, Knox County, Indiana:
Charles Viehe, head, 71, married (?), born in Indiana, parents born in
Germany, farmer
Louisa Piper, daughter, 42, widowed, born in Indiana
Ellsia, granddaughter, ?, Indiana
Charles, grandson, 10, IN
Elmer, grandson, 9, IN
Clara, granddaughter, 7, IN
Dora (here's our Dora), granddaughter, 5, IN
5. It appears Charles (the younger, b. around 1870) may have moved to
Tennessee as I find a Chas F Viehe, right age, born in Indiana, in the 1920
census in Tennessee. Need more confirmation to say for sure.
6. I have found Anne Viehe (picture of her included) in
rootsweb.com
databases. She lived most of her life in Missouri. Please go to
rootsweb.com for the obit, death date, marriage info, and info on her
husband and his ancestry. Her parentage is a bit confusing to fit into the
puzzle as it says Mr and Mrs Henry Viehe in the obit - but John Henry didn't
have Anne, I know that for sure. Who is this other Henry?
7. Mrs. Helen Holtman is Helena Viehe who married Henry Holtman. She was
said to have been born in Germany in 1860.
This is all I have so far, I haven't had a chance to check
Ancestry.com -
only FamilySearch, HeritageQuest and Rootsweb. I'm sorry for how messy and
long this message is. I have not been able to figure out how my John H.
Viehe is connected to William F, Charlotte and Charles (the younger) yet. I
know he is, this is why I have these pictures - he married a McNabb. Is
Charles (the older) an older brother of William F? I've also found other
Viehe's in the Knox County area that I am sure are somehow related, but
haven't figured out how yet. One good piece of news is that I now know the
place the family came from in Germany - atleast I think. If anyone has any
info to add about the Viehe's, please do let me know. I hope someone may
find this helpful or that I can find descendants of any of these people I
have in photo.
