Local High School students have completed their one and one-half year project on the
history of coal mining in Pike County. the book spans the history of mining from 1835 thru
1999.
The book is softbound, 163 pages, not indexed; Chapters include: A Day in the Life; Mules,
Rats and Canaries; Unions; Women and children in the Mine; Homor and Tragedies; Black
Lung; Equipment and Technology; History; Maps; Conclusion; Seniority List (List of
employees at Enos Mines starting 15 Sept 1921); and Bibliography.
The book is great if your ancestors were coal miners. You get a look at what life was like
for a mining family. There are several pictures throughout the book, mostly from the
1921-40 years.
Maps showing locations of most of the underground mines, strip mines and total mined area
in the county are included.
"The Coal Miner's Cry" sells for $12.00 each and may be purchased from: Beth
Bohnert, Pike Central High School, 1810 E. SR56, Petersburg, IN 47567. Add $1.50 for

I purchases the last two books in the first printing this weekend. They have ordered 100
more. To reserve a book from the second printing, Beth said to call her at Pike Central at
