I have been perusing the 1850 Pike Co. census looking for my usual
Drews, Davises, Crows, and Hardins. In looking through the occupations,
I noticed the usual farmers, wagoners, etc. I saw that there were
numerous ones that were labeled "canalers" or something similar. Many
of these men were listed as single men, many from Germany or Ireland.
Was there a canal being built in Pike Co. at that time, or am I reading
this incorrectly? Betty A.
