John Yates enlisted at Alton, Crawford County, Indiana on November 20, 1861
for a period of time extending for, "During the War" and reported for duty
seven days later on November 27, 1861 at Camp Nevin, located 76 miles from
home in Munfordville, Kentucky. What follow will be details and
transcriptions/interpretations from letters and documents; although we focus
on John remember he is joining and serving with many of our other families
and ancestors from Indiana.

John is writing this letter in December 1861, a year that has already seen
extraordinary things occur. He is writing to his "Good Companion" that he is
well and hardy and explains that it has rained 4 inches and that he has been
on picket duty. He is assuring her that she can rest contented as danger is
far from his location. He tells her that he stood picket duty with 3 other
guys and they rotated standing out in the cold rain while warming themselves
next to a fire; he also explained that there was a false alarm during the
night with the firing of 15-20 guns..........
