The data included in new family search is available in the old family search
www.familysearch.org. The difference is that new familysearch for members
has the membership records of the church so when a member logs in using
their membership number, a pedigree appears beginning with that member. The
major reason the Mormon or LDS church is involved in family history work is
to accomplish ordinance work in the temples for the members' ancestors. The
ordinance information is available on the new family search site. But the
site itself consists of the same databases that are available at the
original family
search.org, namely, ancestral file, pedigree resource file,
IGI, etc.
What is new and perhaps exciting at least to those with American and English
ancestors is the pilot family search database. You can reach it from
www.familysearch.org or use this link
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 The pilot program
is a beginning of newly indexed data. The Mormons hope to index all the
names on all the millions of microfilms in their vault in Salt Lake City.
They have been working on the indexing project for more than a year now, and
recently announced that the 100 million names have been indexed. As the
indexing project continues, the numbers in the pilot database will grow. I
have been volunteering as an indexer for less than a year. In that time, I
have seen only two German Language projects and they were not Silesian. I
don't know if any of the German indexed material is on-line yet, I have not
see it.
