Thank you for this information. It may well be that there has been some
blending of the two Williams.
Unless William Carroll-born GA was also Catholic, the Obit. printed in
Cannelton Newspaper dated
Jan-26-1889 was for 'my' William Carroll-born Ireland:
"William Carroll, aged 52, was buried from St. Patrick's Church on
Wednesday last. He leaves a wife and three children."
Using a perpetual calendar, Jan. 26, 1889 was a Sat. so, "Wednesday last"
would have been Jan. 23.
William & Anna (Minton) Carroll had a son, James Dionisius, b. 1874,
probably in Hardin Co., KY (St. Clare Church Records); their second & third
children were Mary Margaret "Maggie" b. 1876 and Joseph W. b. 1878, both KY. I
have searched extensively for this family group in 1880 but have not found
them. I believe James must have died young although I have not been able
to prove that. My grandmother, Anna Carroll, was born 1886 in Perry Co.,
IN. The time gap between Joseph (1878) and Anna (1886) makes me wonder if
there may have been other children that I am unaware of.
I have a copy of St Michael/St Patrick Perry Co. Parish Cannelton IN Deaths
1866-1916 that has the following (it's in Latin, so I'll do my best):
1889 (at top of page)
?Inleilmus Carrol; Die 21 Jannaru" ( " symbol over the u ) obu"t in
Domino ?Inlielmus Carrol anno 47 ?aetatis
?unae ?quem ?repetor die 23 ?ejus dem
Joanner Enl Book
I had one year of Latin in 1965 so I don't remember much - about the only
thing I am pretty sure of is 'die' is 'day'. I think it is a safe bet
that
'anno' is some form of 'year'. I can't imagine 'Jannaru' is
anything but
'January'. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I read this as William Carrol, day 21 January (obut- ?died) in Domino
William Carrol age 47 ?------------ day 23 ?--------.
I don't see how to interpret this any other way than that he died on Jan.
21st, 1889 and was buried Jan. 23rd.

Patrick Carroll has always been a puzzle to me. Using the dates you have,
he would have been born exactly 9 months after William's death. I would
like for that to be how it was, but I have different information.
I have the following Baptism information for Patrick (St
Michael/StPatrick, Perry Co., IN, Parish Cannelton, IN, Baptism 1887-1935)
Record #1882: Carrol; Die 2 Oct 1890
Ego infrascriptus baptizavi: Patricimus nat?? die 26
ex: Anna Carrol
ex loco: Cannelton
et: Patre Ignoto
Patrini Fuernut: Maria Callaghan
Joannes Enl Book
Again, with my limited Latin, I would interpret 'Patre Ignoto' as Father
unknown. My assumption is that he would have had the last name of Carroll
since that was what his mother's name was. I would be very happy if there
is some other explanation.
My ultimate goal in the original query is to find where in Ireland that
William Carroll was born. I am sure he was Irish. His daughter, my
grandmother, Anna (Carroll) Gibbs, gave 'Co. Tipperarie, Ireland' as her
father's
birthplace. Anna was 3 years old when her father died, so I have always
wondered if that information was correct. The name William Carroll in
Ireland, even in Co. Tipperary, is about as common as John Smith in America, so I
really would like to narrow his birth year.
Where did you get the date 21 Dec. 1889 for the Irish William Carroll's
death?
I do remember visiting the Tell City-Perry Co. Library talking with you.
I will visit again as soon as time allows. Thanks again for your help.

Jane --
I see in my files that we corresponded in Oct 2003 and I researched this
family at that time. It appears there were two different William Carrolls in
Cannelton in the 1880s. I have copies of the St. Michael's and St.
Patrick's Church records.
One William Carrol, born in 1840s in Georgia, was married to Frances
(Kimble). She has a grave marker in Cannelton Cliff Cemetery and was born 13
Oct 1846, d. 10 Sep 1888. He was a steamboatman, age 40 listed in Cannelton
in 1880 census. They were living in Harrison Co. IN 1n 1870 census, and had
children born in Kentucky in 1872 and 1874 before coming to Cannelton. A
further check of the obituary in the Cannelton Enquirer, 26 Jan 1889 might be
his obituary.
Your William Carrol and wife Anna are buried in St. Michael's Cemetery.
St. Michael's Death Record has his death date as 21 Dec 1889, age 47, buried
23 Dec. Anna Carrol had a son Patrick born nine months later, 26 Sep
1890. She was listed in 1900 census, widow, b. Mar 1843, with four children
including Patrick. The 1900 census lists the birthplace of the father of her
children as Ireland.
The St. Michael's Cemetery Plat Book B, #81, lists owner Anna Carroll, odd
size, 18'6" x 9'3" -- 5'6" walk east.
I hope this info helps to explain the two different death dates.

Subject: [INPERRY] St. Michael's Catholic Church Cemetery Records,
Cannelton
My g-grandparents, William and Anna (Minton) CARROLL are buried in St.
ichael's Catholic Church Cemetery in Cannelton.
illiam's tombstone is inscribed with the dates 1843 - 1888. The death
ate is definitely wrong and should be 1889 (per obituary & Death Records,
he
ied Jan. 21, 1889). Birth date is anyone's guess: Per obituary, he was
orn 1837 (age 52). Per Parish Death Ledger dated 1889, he was born 1842
in Latin: Anno 47). Per two Perry Co. death records, he was born 1846
(age
3). Per tombstone, he was born 1843.
amily history holds that William was born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland and
hat Anna (MINTON, Menten, Minto) was probably born in Hardin Co., KY.
I thought perhaps there might be Cemetery Records for St. Michael's
atholic Church Cemetery maintained somewhere in Perry Co., and if so,
where
ould I find them? I'm not looking for tombstone transcriptions, but the
ctual records of burial plots. What details might they contain?
oping for some details that would help pinpoint William's birthyear and
irthplace.
hanks for any help.
