Hi Judy,
I solved the John M. Scott mystery...(quite by accident!) His family is living next door
to family 1009, and 1010, Susana Goble .
Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: Clark, Perry, Indiana; Roll: M653_288; Page:
922; Image: 139.
The recorder wrote John M. Scott 44 M farmer (Value of real estate) 800( Personal
Estate)275 ( b )Kentucky; and then put ditto marks all the way down to the bottom of the
page ( 5 family members in all) and onto the next page (through 7 more members) .
I have yet to prove this was an error. But in 1850 in Jefferson County Kentucky this
family is listed under surname Scott. All of the children used surname Scott. Francis
(Frank) later married Louisa Goble (11) who was next door living with Susana Goble
(56)and two sisters.
James A married Nancy Sandage. The Sandages intermarried with the Dowell's,
Hill's, and Snider's. I think I find John M . Scott in 1870 also, but have yet to
prove it!
Sandy

Subject: Re: [INPERRY] Scott
Scott isn't one of my lines but I try to follow all the various lines who
have touched foot on Perry, Spencer or Gibson Co, IN soil so when persons
contact me that I can see if I can get them in touch with others searching
the same line or give info.
I never saw John M. Scott ever being here and don't see him on the 1860
census as you mentioned -- thought maybe it was one I hadn't copied yet so
even searched for all of their names (husband, wife, Ben, etc) and don't
find them at all. Where exactly did they live when on that census? (like
Cannelton, the township, etc) because maybe I read Scott as something other
than that and maybe that is why I am not finding them.
The only Ben or Benjamin I found was the one who was first showing on 1870
census and was born in Indiana (not Kentucky as John's child was), and
although both were similar in age I found in my notes where someone had told
me that this was the one who had married Effie Jane Wilgus and was child of
Alexander:
1860 Census
Washington, Marion, IN
1018-1018
Alexandre Scott 29 IN [b ca 1831] KY KY
Jane 25 IN
Cyrus 8 IN IN IN
Benjamin 3 IN IN IN
Charlotte 1 IN IN IN
Unfortunately I never tried to prove whether this was true or not since not
one of my lines (I concentrate on vitals and things in Perry Co itself
mostly) -- and am only going on what had been given me in past (wish I had
written down who sent me this info, but I didn't).
Sorry I am not much help - but would like to know more about your mentioning
that John M. Scott and his family were showing on the 1860 Perry Co, IN
census since I still am not finding them - even used ancestry and
genealogy.com to search and came up Zilch for them there in 1860.
Do you have any of the other children of John M. Scott marrying, dying,
being born, etc. in Perry Co, IN?
My best,
Judy M.
Judy,
Thanks for the reply but I think that we have our Benjamin's mixed up.
The Benjamin that I am researching is Benjamin C. Scott who married
Effie Jane Wilgus as a second wife on 3 June 1877 in Perry Co, IN. It
was for their marriage that "G.W. Scott" officiated.
Benjamin was the son of John M. Scott and Margaret A. Dowell. I have
no father identified for John M. On both the 1850 and 1860 census, his
birth place is listed as KY. He was in Perry Co for the latter census
and Jefferson Co, KY for the 1850. I believe that he was the John Scott
enumerated in Martin Co, IN for the 1840. He married in Breckinridge
Co, KY in 1836 to Margaret A. Dowell. He is thought to have been born
in either 1814 or 1816.
Since I have no siblings either, I have no idea where he was in the
birth order of his family, so it is entirely possible that he could have
had a brother born in the early 1830's if John is the oldest and the
brother the youngest. If John is late in the birth order, it is
possible that he could have had a nephew who was just 15 or 16 years
younger than himself.
That is why I was interested in G. W. Scott. If this G. W. Scott, JP
in 1877, is from KY, it might be a possibility to explore to see if he
might be a collateral line. If he is, he would most likely be either an
uncle to Benjamin C. Scott or a cousin to Benjamin C.
Who is the Benjamin Scott that was a son to Alexander Scott?
