JP is customarily an abbreviation for justice of the peace. The level of
other responsibilties for this office varies from state to state and I don't
know about Indiana. At some times and places it is a local judge.

Judy,
Thanks for the reply but I think that we have our Benjamin's mixed up.
The Benjamin that I am researching is Benjamin C. Scott who married
Effie Jane Wilgus as a second wife on 3 June 1877 in Perry Co, IN. It
was for their marriage that "G.W. Scott" officiated.
Benjamin was the son of John M. Scott and Margaret A. Dowell. I have
no father identified for John M. On both the 1850 and 1860 census, his
birth place is listed as KY. He was in Perry Co for the latter census
and Jefferson Co, KY for the 1850. I believe that he was the John Scott
enumerated in Martin Co, IN for the 1840. He married in Breckinridge
Co, KY in 1836 to Margaret A. Dowell. He is thought to have been born
in either 1814 or 1816.
Since I have no siblings either, I have no idea where he was in the
birth order of his family, so it is entirely possible that he could have
had a brother born in the early 1830's if John is the oldest and the
brother the youngest. If John is late in the birth order, it is
possible that he could have had a nephew who was just 15 or 16 years
younger than himself.
That is why I was interested in G. W. Scott. If this G. W. Scott, JP
in 1877, is from KY, it might be a possibility to explore to see if he
might be a collateral line. If he is, he would most likely be either an
uncle to Benjamin C. Scott or a cousin to Benjamin C.
Who is the Benjamin Scott that was a son to Alexander Scott?
