Not a problem, Nancy. Every list needs some one such as yourself who
takes an interest in all who have lived for a time in a county. It
makes for the best lists.
I never saw John M. Scott ever being here and don't see him on
the 1860
census as you mentioned -- thought maybe it was one I hadn't copied yet so
even searched for all of their names (husband, wife, Ben, etc) and don't
find them at all. Where exactly did they live when on that census? (like
Cannelton, the township, etc) because maybe I read Scott as something
other
than that and maybe that is why I am not finding them.
Well, I can empathize because I can't find hide nor tail of him in 1870
but he is said by his widow to have died in Perry Co in 1878. I'm
beginning to suspect that that information was wrong.
However, in 1860 he is listed as simply "J.M. Scott". They are in
Clark township, PO Lascher's Ridge. It should be page 136, beginning at
line 36 and continuing on the next page. It is a fair size family with
10 children listed and a foster child, Josephine Letcher.
The only Ben or Benjamin I found was the one who was first showing on
1870
census and was born in Indiana (not Kentucky as John's child was),
My Ben was 11 years old in 1860, according to the census. According to
the census, the entire family was born in KY. I have no idea why they
are so listed. Only one child was actually born in KY, that was America
Jane, born in late 1850. The rest were born in IN, either Martin Co for
those older than her or Perry Co for those younger than her.
and
although both were similar in age I found in my notes where someone had
told
me that this was the one who had married Effie Jane Wilgus and was
child
of
Alexander:
1860 Census
Washington, Marion, IN
1018-1018
Alexandre Scott 29 IN [b ca 1831] KY KY
Jane 25 IN
Cyrus 8 IN IN IN
Benjamin 3 IN IN IN
Charlotte 1 IN IN IN
I think that they gave you a bumsteer, Nancy. Probably because they
didn't realize that Benjamin C. married twice. His first marriage was
to Charity Snyder on 31 July 1870 in Perry Co. Her parents were Robert
M. Snyder and Sarah D. I may have Sarah's surname...but I don't have it
on the computer. (I started this stuff before we even had a computer!
That is what I'm trying to do now.)
The information that we have on these Scotts is pretty solid. Effie
Jane didn't die until 17 Aug 1932 in Pierce Co, ND where she was living
with my grandparents. Her portrait hangs in my family room. I have the
Bible of Benjamin C. and Effie.
Unfortunately I never tried to prove whether this was true or not
since
not
one of my lines (I concentrate on vitals and things in Perry Co
itself
mostly) -- and am only going on what had been given me in past (wish I had
written down who sent me this info, but I didn't).
Sorry if you heard me sort of snicker. Don't we all have little bits
and pieces like that?
Sorry I am not much help - but would like to know more about your
mentioning
that John M. Scott and his family were showing on the 1860 Perry Co,
IN
census since I still am not finding them - even used ancestry and
genealogy.com to search and came up Zilch for them there in 1860.
Do you have any of the other children of John M. Scott marrying, dying,
being born, etc. in Perry Co, IN?
This is going to be a bit incomplete because I don't have it all on the
computer but...
John M. Scott was born 24 Oct 1815, probably in KY. He married Margaret
A. Dowell, (born 15 Jan 1813, probably in VA but maybe KY),on 4 Aug
1836, probably in Breckinridge Co, KY. He diead 2 April 1877 possibly
in Perry Co, IN. (Per widow's pension claim based on son who had served
in Civil War but I can't document his death date nor place other than
her claim.) Margaret A. Scott died 19 sep 1898 in Barton Co, MO

d. 2 April 1887, Perry Co, IN

That is the info that I currently have on the computer. Maybe someone
else will recognize some of it and be able to add to our knowledge by
filling in the blanks.
Thanks for the help, Nancy.
