Judy,
I had a goof in my earlier post. I should have said that Ben Scott and
family moved in the mid-1880's to Moultrie/Shelby Co IL, not IN.

I noticed you said that they moved to Barton Co, MO because this is
where
Nancy Sandage Scott moved with her husband, James, and her family -- they
first went to Illinois -- first child born Perry Co, IN and then next 3 or 4
born in Illinois then they went to Missouri and had more children there too.
I have an abbreviated version of the entries for James and Nancy living
in Shelby Co in 1880. Right next door to them is his brother, Francis
C. and wife and Margaret Scott, the mother of James and Francis, is
living with Francis. Benjamin C. and Effie Jane arrived there some time
between 1883 and 1885. I am not really certain yet as to which county
they lived in. Need to do more map work and double checking of sources...
I didn't realize that James and Nancy had gone to Barton Co, too. That
is interesting. Do you know if he too came to ND? There was a James A.
Scott who homesteaded in ND in 1903.
So apparently the family was moving together around the USA at least
for
awhile. I was going to search in Illinois to see if maybe in 1870 where the
parents were and why we can't find them.
I'ld be interested to see what you find.
As for George W. Scott - I only see one in the county - there were
several
George names, but none I ever saw used the W. middle name except that one
older gentleman.
Well, assuming that I did the abstraction correctly almost 30 years
ago, from what I have, it looks like there were at least 2. In 1860
there is a George W. Scott, age 25, born in KY who is a teamster. His
wife is named as Irene. They have several children, the youngest one is
just a baby, with the interesting name of something like "Lockley".
Interesting in part because there is a Thomas P. Scott, in his 50's, who
is also a teamster, and who has a wife named something that looked like
"Lockley".
In 1870, there is a fellow who is called, simply, George Scott, age 39,
born in KY, who is a farmer. His wife is named as Nancy. They have
children too but none of the names match those of the previous George.
In 1880, this second George is listed again, now called George W. with
his wife Nancy C. and some of the same kids who were named in 1870.
I found no mention of Thomas P...or at least none that I copied and I
didn't find the other George W. nor his wife Irene.
So I'm thinking that this is a different George from the one in
1860...and it is he who was probably the Justice of the Peace for the
marriage in 1877 of Ben Scott and Effie Jane Wilgus. The other George
and Thomas P. may have died or moved by 1870...or I just missed them or
got lazy and didn't copy them.
What do you think?
If you need a copy of the 1860 census I have that and can send to you
that
image with the Scott family showing as Goble - it is in .jpg format.
Definitely appears to be census error.
That would be cool if it isn't too much trouble to do. Thanks for the
offer.
