I found this affidavit in the pension papers of Beverly Gilpatrick and
thought I would share with the group.
Affidavit filed for Civil War Widows Pension by William M. Kellems for
Ingebird Brady Gilpatrick , sister of Tabitha Brady Warthen
November 27, 1888
General Affidavit
State of Indiana, County of Perry.
In the matter of Inga widow of Beverly Gillpatrick, late a PRt. In Co I of
the 53rd Reg’t of Indiana Vols., for the Widows Pension. On this the 27th day
of November A. D., 1888, personally appeared before me, a Notary public in
and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths William M.
Kellems, aged 55 years, a resident of Clark Township in the County of Perry and
the State of Indiana whose Post office address is Siberia, Perry County,
Ind. and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who,
being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That in
the year of 1854 a Man and his family by the name of Smith Warthen moved from
Overton Co. Tennessee to this county and lived here a few years and died.
Affient was among the first to get acquainted with said Warthen family and
frequently heard Smith Warthen and his wife talk about their Brother in law by
the name of Beverly Gillpatrick. (Smith Warthen Maried Tabitha Brady now also
dec’d.) Beverly Gillpatrick and Inga Gillpatrick addressed to the Said
Smith Warthen and each party addressed the other as Dear Brother and Sister in
their letters. This took place in 1855 and 1856, 1857, 1858 about this time
the old man Warthen died as well as I can recollect. But the correspondence
was Kept up more or less until 1863 when the union Loving people of Tennessee
had to seek safety in a land among the Free ___rebel Element getting too
strong for them in the good old State of Tennessee. Many left for parts unknown.
Beverly, David, Andrew and Joseph Gillpatrick came here brought their
families and their old mother. They lived here abouts for awhile then moved to
other parts but Beverly Gillpatrick he bought ______ home and went to work
improving it. ___________ the county seat of Overton Co. was said to be destroid
during ____ by the Rebs and all records burned. But Miss Inga Brady ___
married to Beverly Gillpatrick as we are bound to believe _____ of
circumstantial evidence. I worked with Beverly Gillpatrick before he went in the
Service --- best of his judgement he was a stout able bodied ________return from
the service he complained of weakness ______ brought on by chronic diarrhea
and rheumatism ____ in the service and lasted up to his death.
I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am _____
prosecution.
