Here is some more (sorry I am having to chop up but my email times out
and then deletes everything I had just typed in -- so have to put into
smaller or make in another document and then copy and paste into the
message, etc.
Anyway, we know they were still in Ohio until between 1862 and 1870
timeframe since Francis was born in Ohio. We also know that he
apparently married Selina since she is now his wife on 1870 census
(don't have mention of what happened to her son, Thomas Doughty,
though). Since He married her before Francis was born (Francis says
his mother was born OH one census, KY another while Elizabeth and other
previous children said mother born England) -- then I assume that this
marriage took place in Clermont County or thereabouts. I don't see it
offhandedly looking through a large database of Cincinnati area county
marriages for that timeframe, but Clermont Co isn't listed in that
database, either.
Remember too that if they came across land then they probably took
rivers down from the road and Little Miami and other rivers are large
enough and were used for this type of travel back then and this little
town in Ohio isn't far from many of those rivers and just north of the
Ohio River -- which they probably took down to Perry Co, IN by barge,
flatboat, riverboat or something else not very fancy (only very wealthy
could ride in the fancy steamwheelers, etc). One other aspect of the
travelers back then was that they would go so far and then stop to
either work for money to get food, clothing, etc. or stop if someone
was having a child or ill -- so this may have been a factor on why they
had stopped in that area -- if Elizabeth was ill or pregnant (showed
one child born around 1858 and her insane in 1860 so both are
possibles). People would also travel according to where the jobs were -
- if news traveled up the river saying there was coal mine work or
cheap land or work at xxx company -- then the people would go to that
location and settle. Very good possibility of why they left Ohio and
went on to Indiana. They also may have gone from New York to Ohio
because I see that there were some other Pannett persons in the area --
one was elderly widow in Columbus who may have been his mother or aunt
or another relative. Some others settled down south Ohio along the
Ohio river and stayed there, I saw a few living that timeframe in the
Wheeling, WVA area (this is right across the river from Ohio and where
the Zanes trace begins, I believe).
Although the age seems off for Selina all the others are about right --
remember that many of these folks didn't always remember how old they
were or when their birthdate was -- one reason they would put things in
a family Bible. If they couldn't read, then the Bible didn't help them
and they went by memory -- so Selina may have been this way and not
remembering how old she was (I have to laugh when I run across entries
like this because I don't know how many times I have said I was one age
only to find out I was one or two years younger or older than what I
said -- and I CAN read, write and even can count hee hee). Also
sometimes the census takers would get information from neighbors or the
family members (young children) who really didn't know the age of a
father or mother. Censuses are only guidelines -- especially since I
found out years ago from several old census takers themselves that they
often would start this list years before since they had to use their
feet and walk and only the more wealthy ones had a horse or buggy to
take them to the houses and in the country these were far far long
walks especially in the wintertime -- so they would do this starting
sometimes 2 or 3 years before and then would forget to make the
readjustment when they transcribed everything into the proper book page
in the census year. He said they would listen to the gossip and adjust
the births and deaths accordingly so it would be right when the census
time came. He had a lot of other interesting tales -- but the main one
I discovered was about WHY the birth age is so often times off and same
with place of birth or parents' birth place can change, etc. Learned a
lot from these old census takers -- they may have been all 70 and older
(oldest was 109 when I talked with him) -- but they all still were very
very clear headed and in their recollections of the family persons in
the area). So here in America we use the census info just as
guidelines and if we can't find other records, etc.
1870 census living Adyeville, Clark Tp, Perry Co, IN:
Robert Pannett 40 England
Selina Pannett 52 b OH
Mary A Pannett 17 OH
James H Pannett 16 OH
Elizabeth H Pannett 14 OH
Sarah J Pannett 13 OH
Francis R Pannett 8 OH
Now you will see that Thomas isn't in this household, and Francis was
born, Selina is now a wife and a Pannett.
Some of the marriages for this family between 1870 and 1900 were:
Elizabeth Pannett married George Morris Perry Co, IN 22 Mar 1874 Book
4 Page 287
Sarah Jane Pannett married Stilwell Taylor Perry Co, IN 29 Apr 1875
Book 4 Page 377
Robert Pannett married Susannah Taylor Perry Co, IN 06 Aug 1877 Book 4
Page 535
Francis Pannett married Susannah Rhodes Perry Co, IN 24 Dec 1881 Book 5
Page 341
Frances Pannett married Mary Ellen Jarboe Perry Co, IN 26 Aug 1884 Book
5 Page 566
You will now see that if you checked the 1880 census you will find
Elizabeth with George Morris (and you will find Francis with them
although census taker made mistake and put him as in next house when he
is really with them and showing as brother-in-law), and Sarah is with
Mr. Taylor, Robert is now with Susannah (he remarried again) and is
living in Anderson Tp, Perry Co, IN. Susannah was born OH, and both
her parents were born OH. The children of Susannah are with her
including a divorced daughter, Eliza J. Taylor, and a step grandson.
You will see also that Frances married two times after the 1880 census.
1880 census showed:
Anderson Tp, Perry Co, IN
lived between Elias Terry and Judge E. Terry families
228-228
Robert 52 England England England Farmer
Susanah 47 wife OH OH OH
Eliza J. Taylor 25 dau divorced IN OH OH
Lucinda E. Taylor 21 dau IN OH OH
John H. Taylor 18 son IN OH OH
Isaac C. TAYLOR 16 male son IN OH OH
Charles Taylor 8 son IN OH OH
Orville Gitchel 2 male step-grandson IN OH IN
(I think Orville is son of David Gatchel & Eliza Jane Taylor who
married 19 Feb 1876 Perry Co, IN Book 4 Page 427 and since Eliza J.
Taylor is above in same household this is probably correct too).
I think the above Susannah Pannett is the one who died Mar 12, 1906
Tell City, Perry Co, IN at age 73 yr CO-5 Page 30.
Not much more I can tell you about the family except that they had
several sons who were in WWI enlistement registration records and that
there are still 4 or 5 familiesof them living in Tell City and
Cannelton, IN. Have you talked with any of them? Perhaps they might
even have some old photos for your book.
Oh -- just curious -- seems in registration descriptions most were of
medium build, and medium to short in height, and had either red, auburn
or dark hair, and had grey eyes except one who had blue -- what color
of hair and eyes does your descendant have? Just curious how closely
the genetics kept with the line.
Hope some of this helps,
My best,
Judy M.
