Have been getting names of the various orphaned/destitute children in the home for the
vets - here is info for your use if they are your ancestor/relative. I have tried to
guess at the child's age since I haven't taken time to find dob in births, and
approx guess at which war/conflict the veteran was probably in. Note the comment I added
in the narration about the Veterans' Home and the veterans being moved to Ohio after
fire - might help you find some of your military ancestors who just
"disappeared".
The Perry Co, IN Children Who Were Admitted in the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors'
Childrens' Home
In 1865 the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home was founded to
provide care,
education and maintenance to the orphaned and destitute children of Civil War Union Army
veterans. Children 4 to 17 are cared for, and each child educated. It is located approx.
2
miles south of Knightstown, Indiana on State Road 140. The Home is owned by the State of
Indiana, managed through a superintendent, and monitored by the State Department of
Health.
Law was later amended to include all destitute children of servicemen who served on active
duty
in any of the authorized campaigns or declared emergencies of the United States as
evidenced by
an award of authorized decorations for service, an honorable discharge, a letter of
mourning,
or death certificate. Veterans' children from all subsequent wars have been eligible
for
admission since _____ (1923?rchk date).
In 1865 the Soldier's Orphan's Home was first in the Military Hospital,
Indianapolis, IN
starting with four orphans. In April 1866 it was moved to Knightstown (across the street
from
the hotel housing the Indiana Soldiers' Home -- note: In 1871 a fire destroyed this
Soldiers'
Home and the veterans were moved to the soldiers' home in Dayton, Ohio. (***take note
of this
if you had an ancestor who resided in the original one before being moved to Ohio)).
The Home underwent numerous name changes: originally named the Indiana Soldiers' and
Seamens'
Home; renamed 1887 the Indiana Soldiers' Orphans' Home; and later in 1929 renamed
the Indiana
Soldiers' and Sailors' Childrens' Home. After 1903 they started trying to
secure foster homes
for some of the children. The Home received support from several veteran's
organizations: The
Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and its women's auxiliary, American Legion and
Auxiliary,
and others.
In 1906 the Home Journal, the school's monthly magazine, began the "Alumni
Column" as an avenue
for ex-pupils to exchange general interest and personal information. (this school
magazine may
be a way that descendants might find some info on their ancestors - but I am unsure if
this has
been microfilmed or accessible to the public)
