John and Mary Avis from Maryland, fairly likely Calvert County, via Maryland.
Matilda, Basil [stayed in KY], and probably James 1810-1868. If not for an
old family legend about James being an orphan who was to stay behind in
Maryland but hid in the wagon when they moved west to KY, I would put James
with this family. Mary with the inscription, "wife of John" is buried at
St. Augustine, RC church cemetary. I am pretty sure John did live to make
the move to Indiana, can't be sure that he even made the move to KY. Basil
was the one who signed for Matilda's marriage. I can't get at the record
this morning, but think Matilda's husband is Walter Wheatley. Marriage
record is Kentucky. They lived adjacent to James and Sarah [nee Miller]
Avis on the 1840 census.
This James and Sarah are the parents of James Henry Avis m Sarah Ann
Patrick, parents of your Bertha Jane.
I do have the children of George Wheatley and spouses for some of them.
John W. Wheatley b 1825
Ellen J Wheatley 1829-1900 married George Little
Elizabeth Wheatley b 1832 m Adam F. Rosencrantz
Jane Wheatly b 1834 died before 1858
William Wheatley b 1836
Joshua Wheatley b 18 Oct 1839 d abt Sep 1868 Lived With George and Ellen
Little for a while.
Sarah Wheatley b 1842 d before 1858
David Lafayette Wheatley b 30 Sep 1847 d 1933 in Arkansas
spouse Nancy J. Gilliland; also lived with George and Ellen.
on some records as Lafe.
The first Wheatley in Perry County so far as I know is John on the 1820
census. Those in Perry County in 1840 are not all aged properly to be his
descendents. My guess is that brother or cousins followed him from Ky to
IN.
Chuck, this morning I am bound to dr for the sneezing, wheezing, coughing.
When I feel better I will drag out records and see what else I can find. Ky
records I believe start as Nelson county, but change from year to year as
Nelson started very large and then new counties were formed out of parts.
If when I recover I forget, email me and remind me. Mind like a steel sieve
at the moment.

Linda,
I have some link to the Wheatley's, but I don't know what it is. I
have been told that they were related somehow through the Avis family. I
also have linkage to the Little's through a cousin who married into their
family.
I would appreciate any family info on these if you can help me.
Thanks for your assistance in advance.

George Wheatley born about 1798 in Kentucky.
17 March 1821 married Mary Ann Jarboe b about 1805, died between 1850 and
1860
died 03 April 1848 in Perry County.
There are at least 3 Wheatley's in Perry County in 1840 of an appropriate
age to be his father.
I can eliminate Leonard Wheatley of Hardin Co., Ky. just across the river.
Leonard had a son George who was still living after my George's estate was
probated.
Mary Ann went to live with their daughter Ellen Wheatley and son in law
George Little. After her death her 2 youngest children David Lafayette
Wheatley and Joshua Wheatley remained with Ellen and George Little.
Has any one sorted out these Wheatleys? If you can't identify George's
father, can you identify any siblings? parentage of other Wheatleys in his
age group? Clearly some folks moved from Kentucky to Indiana before 1840.
Can anyone sort out any of them?
I do have George and Mary Ann's children and good data forward to the
living.

I do have George and Mary Ann's children and good data forward to the
living.

Usually because the pensioners got a monthly check the widow has to apply immediately so she begins getting the check and if any young children so they get their portion too.
So I believe probably died right before Feb 18, 1915. If you have the money you can request his military file and it would show when he died exactly since she has to produce this info to get the pension as well as marriage license if he hadn't already produced this, etc. With the regiments he was in you should be able to obtain the military info - think it is around $15 to $25 for it. Sometimes they even have photos of the person in the file which would enhance your info.
If you need anymore info here is a bit that might help:
1850 he is with his parents and siblings Union Tp, Warren Co, OH - parents are shown as Isaac (b NJ) and R. A. (yes, looks like an R) (b OH)
1860 they have moved to Perry Co, IN and living in Cannelton - with parents Isaac & Jesiah (b OH)
1870 I never found them but may be the Taylor Limmons/Timmons in Lockborn, Franklin Co, IN with wife Maddelon
1880 can't locate him again but see that his father and brother's family are in Jasper, Dubois, Indiana while his wife-to-be is with her family in Troy, Perry Co, IN
1900 name is spelled as Lening and they are in Troy, Perry Co, IN
1910 still in Troy, Perry Co, IN - him with his wife and children
1920 his widow is in Troy, Perry Co, IN with no children at all
I think part of the reason I am not finding him is because there were many persons who were boatmen or worked on boats and he probably did the same, going state to state along the riverways -- and sometimes persons in that field don't always get "caught" for the census readings.
Civ War papers 1886 for the county shows:
Lenning, Z. Taylor Troy Private I 11 OH note: served two other units
There was a photo taken around 1908 or 1909 of the civil war vets -- we have most all identified but there are 2 to 4 not identified -- for all I know he may have been in that group.
I am sending copy of this message to the inperry list -- For all those on the list we have Ms. Frieda M. Davison who is trying to find out where Zachary Taylor Leming died, date of death and where he is buried (believe to be in Perry Co, IN) -- if anyone has any info please send to the list and cc to her at fdavison(a)uscupstate.edu (thank you)
Sorry I haven't been able to help you further,
Judy M.

However, since he is listed in the 1910 census (below), that narrows the death to between 1910 and 1915.
