I correspond with some of WILLIAM CROCKETT'S
descendants. I will pass this a long. This is a problem
with all our families that buried in family cemeteries. I
cannot tell you how many I have visited in pastures with
the cattle tromping at will----grave markers taken up and
put against trees and it goes on. In TN it is against the law
but if no descendants are there to protest, they completely
wipe it out.
Thanks for caring,
Joy

For over 2 years now I have known about a problem that I am afraid
to
get involved in. I have talked to the Historical Society and the head
of the County Museum. They have told me that nothing is being done
because it is only people from outside of the county who seem to care.
The problem is this.....The graveyard where William Crockett is buried
is being taken over by the family who bought the land near the unmarked
cemetery. William Crockett is Davy Crockett's older Brother! I would
love to get involved but I don't want to hamper anything because I am an
outsider. I was born there in Carroll County, Indiana, but now live in
Los Angeles and only get back there in the summer. I was told by the
person with the Historical Society and the Museum that I should write to
the Township Trustee and have them mark or maintain the cemetery (only
about 3-4 headstones still left!......several have disappeared over the
last few years!) and if they did not do their job to notify the sheriff
to enforce the historical cemetery. There is now a child's swing set
within 20 feet of the headstones and the whole area is becoming a
child's play yard. But my understanding is that nothing will be done if
I complain because my Los Angeles address makes me an outsider and the
locals want us outsiders to mind our own business. My family still
lives in the county so I am hesitant about upsetting all of the
neighbors. Can anyone give me advice on how to save this historical
cemetery before it is lost for all time without ruffling too many
feathers and putting a curse on my family name in that county of long
time resident farmers.
