I have harped on cemetery vandalism so much, it is now very refreshing
to be able to bring you this bit of news:
I have just returned from a "planning meeting" with a school teacher
here in Huntington Co. We have assembled a program to tie in with an
accelerated program for 3 - 5 grade students. On May 9th, a group of 15
students who have been studying genealogy will be making a field trip to
Pilcher's Cemetery in Huntington County. These children will learn the
history of the cemetery, the history of the people buried there, they
will have a chance to make a difference by doing a little cleaning
(sticks, trash..). They will also learn to "safely" read the stones
with a flashlight or mirror (no rubbings). We will be talking about the
different types of stones and how to tell marble from granite from
limestone from....
Needless to say, I am very excited to share this project with young
people. These kids are from the communites around Pilcher's so I am
hoping they recognize some of the names on the stones. Maybe this will
foster some respect and even kindle a new genealogist or two. And, yes,
they will have to examine some vandalism and hear about the results.
