PapawB:
That's VERY encouraging news! It tells me that, when we find abandoned,
neglected cemeteries, there is a possibility that the county or township can
be persuaded to accept a deed of the site from the property owner and accept
perpetual responsibility for caring for it. I had mistakenly imagined that
the county and township would be reticent to accept such a transfer.
Thanks for telling us about your successes.

In my county we have transferred land to the township trustee about
ten
times
in the past five years. The current owner has been relieved to give up
the
responsibility of caring for and protecting it. It also reduces his
property
taxes a little bit as cemeteries are tax exempt in Indiana. Also by
law the
trustee is responsible for the abandoned cemetery. Also, it can be
transferred to the county commissioners and the trustee will still be
responsible for it.
