Diana,
I hope you have had an opportunity to attend a workshop on cemetery and
gravestone conservation and repair before undertaking such a task. It really
helps to get some hands-on training with some experienced people. Though we
thought we had some good ideas on how to go about it, the workshop taught us
a lot and boosted our confidence.
Our local monument dealer sold us a package of the epoxy that he uses. It
comes in two 1-quart cans, and you mix it 1:1. This is $50+ a package. One
set got us almost through our project (a cemetery of about 100 stones, all
needing some degree of repair). The adhesive recommeded for most stone (and
for pinning) at the workshop we attended was - Akepox 2010 Epoxy Transp
L-Spec---Honey-2.25Kg. It was available from (also available from other
firms):
GranQuartz
PO Box 33569
Decatur Georgia 30033
Telephone: 800 458-6222
There are also packets you can get; the problem with the packets is that
they cost $7+ each and once opened, cannot be saved for later use. The
adhesive recommended for Marble is --Barre Pak Epoxy - 70 gram Kit-Gray. We
saw it used at a workshop, but have not used it ourselves. It looked
wonderfully handy, but was not economically suited for our use. It is
available from:
Miles Supply Company Inc.
PO Box 237
Barre VT 05641-0237
Telephone: 802 476-3963
You need 1/2 inch fiberglass rods for the pinning (we bought fiberglass
electric fence posts.) And some wooden applicators (tongue depressors).
You will need denatured alcohol and acetone for cleaning the surfaces before
using the epoxy (wear rubber gloves).
I hope this helps. Please keep us posted.
