HOUSE PROVIDES COUNTIES WITH CEMETERY CLEAN-UP CHOICE
(STATEHOUSE) February 18, 1997 -- County cemetery commissions could soon
be given help by the Indiana Historical Bureau under legislation adopted
Tuesday by the Indiana House of Representatives.
House Bill 1202, co-authored by state Rep. Cleo Duncan, R-Greensburg,
would create a tracking system of pre-Civil War cemeteries.
The Indiana Historical Bureau, established to take care of cemeteries
created before 1850 that have been neglected, would help organize
volunteers to assist with the upkeep of the state's older cemeteries.
Under current law, the township trustees are responsible for the upkeep
of Indiana's cemeteries.
"There is so much history in our older cemeteries," Duncan said.
"Unfortunately, they haven't always received the necessary upkeep and
many of them have become overgrown with weeds and are littered with
debris. This measure gives counties the option of filing an annual
report with the state historical bureau and receive a helping hand in
exchange."
HB 1202, which received a 94 to 4 vote, was endorsed by various county
commissioners. The bill now moves to the Senate for further
consideration.
