Wanted to post this this past weekend, but Rootsweb was down. The 9/13/98
Star News (on page A-2) ran the following "corrections". In the interest of
"fairness" and given that the text of the 8/23/98 "Death of a
Cemetery"
story had such exhaustive distribution, I am quoting the entire paragraph:
"A story about the Rhoads pioneer cemetery in Wayne Township, Ind., that ran
in the The Star on Aug. 23 said the pioneer graves were pulled from the
ground by machine. While machines removed the earth on top of the graves,
the coffins were removed by hand. The story also said farmers were exempt
from filingn paperwork to move graves on their land. While headstones can
be REMOVED AT WILL AND THE GROUND PLOWED, disturbing human remains does
require documentation with the state. Lastly, the story said the Department
of Natural Resources issues 10 cemetery relocation permits a year. DNR is
notified of the discovery of human remains about 10 times a year but had not
issued a permit to move an entire cemetery before the Rhoads cemetery case."
