Received your message about Union Township, Clark Co., IN, cemeteries.
There has to be a better way to get this job done. How many cemeteries
are there in Indiana that need attention? There are 92 counties and
perhaps 12 townships in each of them, making 1104 towhships.
Betty organized the ceremony at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pike Twp.,
Marion Co., IN, and was instrumnental in getting the trustee at Southport
and an Eagle Scout to clean up that cemetery. If she could have lived
1000 years, she might have gotten the job done by herself, at least the
ones left. Our Color Guard participated both times.
I have outline a procedure that is well designed to get legislative
action, but everyone wants to be a hero and do it alone right now!
Betty wrote up a program and invited representatives of all veterans
organizations, township, county and state officials, hereditary
organizations and the news media. We should leave nothing out. We
should do these things in addition: Include in the program a copy of the
state law on maintenance of abandoned cemetaries and include in the
program a statement that the condition of the cemetery they see reflects
the care and consideration of the Township Trustee and each member of the
Advistory Board. Mail to the Trustee and each of the three members of
his advisory board a copy of this program at least three months in
advance of the celebration (in order that they may have time to clean it
up). Determine which member of the state legislature can present our
case, and invite them to speak at each dedication. Furnish
representatives of the media our entire plan..
