Subject: Cemetery excitement!
Lois,
I just returned from an Indiana State Historical Society Focus meeting.
IHS
conducted the 4th of 5 workshops around the state to get an idea how
they
could help promote the History of our state. There were library heads,
museum curators, Historical and Genealogical Societies, County Historians
and even a home school organization who were all interested in how the IHS
could help them promote history in this NO. Indiana area.
Has anyone attended one of these meetings in their area?
Our meeting was in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana. It included Starke,
Marshall, LaPorte, Lake, Porter, Jasper counties in NW Indiana.
I would like to hear the outcome of the other Focus meetings already held
in
the state. And where is the last meeting to be held. If someone on
the
list
is going to the last focus meeting we need them to promote the
preservation
of cemeteries. Every county Historical and Genealogical organizations and
museums were invited to one of these meetings held through out the state.
I had previously asked the IHS to help with a state workshop on all our
cemetery issues. The IHS is moving into their new building and cant plan
to
far ahead with their workshops at this time. They said they
hadn't
forgotten me and this was my opportunity to speak. We all had time to
speak
on any issues and concerns. I brought some awareness to our cause and
the
IHS said they would put cemeteries on the list for a workshop.
Other topics discussed were getting volunteers and members, preservation,
working together with other interest groups in our area instead of both
working alone for the same cause, more outreach by the IHS, possibly making
educational videos or manuals on various topics.
And as usual the Northern part of the state thinks the Southern or central
part gets to much attention.
The IHS wants to combine our efforts into local groups throughout the
state.
