Helen Wildermuth <helen(a)reliable-net.net> suggested that there should be a
Hall of FAME on the INPCRP website to counterbalance the Hall of SHAME we
started last December.
The thought has crossed my mine repeatedly, but I haven't done anything
about it for two reasons. (1) It requires an ENORMOUS commitment of time
and energy, which I just don't have at present and (2) I think this is
something that would be more appropriate on the INPCRP county pages. People
working on a local level are the key here. It's really hard for me sitting
here at the far end of the state to understand the geography and local
history of an area needed to construct a webpage extolling the efforts of
others to protect and preserve pioneer cemeteries 200 miles away or more.
If we can get folks involved on setting up pages about the restoration of
cemeteries in Indiana, I'll be glad to add a page of links similar to the
Hall of Shame.
Of course, this would require that we enlist a LOT more county coordinators
and that they either learn how to do HTML code and create the webpages or
enlist the assistance of someone in their communities to help with the
webpage creation. I'm sure that if someone is absolutely convinced they
will NEVER learn webpage construction they could find a teenager willing to
do the actual set-up and/or maintenance of the website. Kids today have
access to everything they need to set up a webpage (scanner, etc.) and many
would probably be pleased to help.
Frankly, neither Scott nor I haven't gotten much response to our repeated
pleas for people to "adopt" Indiana counties. As we've pointed out in the
past, you don't even have to live in the county or in the state for that
matter to be a County Coordinator, thanks to the wonders of the Internet.
You just have to have an interest and certain level of knowledge about the
county in question and, of course, contacts within that community.
Scott volunteered to help folks set up their webpages and we offered
suggestions on finding free webspace but have only had a few takers. I
think he got one or two responses and those are linked at the INPCRP "County
Selector" page. (If you haven't looked at them, please take a minute and do
that.)
What I HAVE done in one instance is note on the Hall of Shame that a
cemetery is a "restoration project" and linking to the webpage for that
project.
I'm open to suggestions on this subject. Any ideas?
Lois
