I am a member of many e-mail discussion groups, one of which is CEMETERY-L
on Rootsweb. One of the members on that group recently posted a report that
the Attorney General of Iowa, at the request of the Office of the State
Archaeologist, has "reviewed the Iowa laws" and will soon be printing a
"Question and Answer" booklet reflecting the opinions of that office on the
subject of cemeteries.
What do we have to do to get the INDIANA ATTORNEY GENERAL to do such a
report? I, for one, am quite interested in official "public policy" on the
subject of the right of ingress and egress as well as the rights and duties
of the owners of property surrounding a cemetery and whether a cemetery can
be landlocked? Also, what rights do the general public have for reasonable
access to pioneer cemeteries? What rights do we, as preservationists, have
in seeking access to abandoned and neglected cemeteries for the purposes of
evaluation and potential restoration?
Just a few questions to get the ball rolling.
Any thoughts?
Lois
