Hi all,
It's been pretty quiet in here lately so I thought I'd bring some
exciting news to those of you who might be interested....
I just received Susanne S. Ridlen's new book "Tree Stump Tombstones: A
Field Guide to Rustic Funerary Art in Indiana". I haven't read through it
yet, but it seems to detail the rustic symbolism employed and many variations
of this type of monument. I hope the information in this book will *finally*
end the assertion by some that all tree-stump monuments were beneficiary
awards of the Woodmen of the World insurance policies. The bibliography is
extensive and thankfully there are footnotes! I will definitely do a review
of this book in Tomb With A View after having the opportunity to examine it
more closely.
Ridlen, Suzanne S. Tree Stump Tombstones: A Field Guide to Rustic Funerary
Art in Indiana. Kokomo, Indiana: Old Richardville Publications, 1999.
It can be ordered from Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, 220 N. Union
Street, Kokomo, Indiana 46901-4614 hardbound or paper, but unfortunately they
did not include the cost. I'll get back to you on that.
